Scoring key

Mark every turn: 1 right, 0 missed 1 or 0
Type 1 or x for a spelling the judges accept, 0 for a miss.
A miss puts the speller out
A wrong spelling ends that speller's bee at once.
A round where every speller misses
Nobody goes out: all stay in and a new round begins.
One speller right, the rest wrong
The only speller to spell correctly in a round, while every other speller in it misses, is the champion.
Out in the same round, tied for a place
Spellers who go out in the same round share a place, so equal totals are a tie. A tiebreaker is the officials' call.

Judging a spelling bee 11

  • A miss puts the speller out A wrong spelling ends that speller's bee at once.
  • A points bee, where nobody goes out Our suggestion for a class: every speller takes a word in every round, and the most words right after the last round wins.
  • A round where every speller misses Nobody goes out: all stay in and a new round begins.
  • Correct means every letter, in order The right letters in the right order. A speller is not marked wrong for leaving out the word before or after the spelling, or for not naming a capital or a hyphen.
  • Mark every turn: 1 right, 0 missed Type 1 or x for a spelling the judges accept, 0 for a miss.
  • One record keeper for the whole bee The rules advise naming one judge or record keeper to follow every speller through the rounds, so the end of the bee is not in doubt.
  • One speller right, the rest wrong The only speller to spell correctly in a round, while every other speller in it misses, is the champion.
  • Out in the same round, tied for a place Spellers who go out in the same round share a place, so equal totals are a tie. A tiebreaker is the officials' call.
  • Starting again mid-word A speller may go back and start the word again, but is disqualified for changing the letters, or their order, from those first said.
  • What a speller may ask the pronouncer To say the word again, define it, use it in a sentence, and give its part of speech, its language of origin and any alternate pronunciation on the list.
  • Your own bee's rules come first These are rules suggested for local bees. The officials of a bee may change them, the end of the bee included.

How this list was compiled: The layout of both sheets and the points bee are our own; no organizer issued or approved them. The rules in the key were checked on 2026-10-16 against the 2027 Suggested Rules for Spelling Bees published by the Scripps National Spelling Bee at https://spellingbee.com/sites/default/files/inline-files/2027_Suggested_Rules_for_Spelling_Bees.pdf for elimination on a misspelling (rule 7); a round in which no speller is correct, the speller who alone is correct in a round, and ties among spellers eliminated in the same round (rule 8); the correct letters in the correct order, what a speller may ask and what a speller is not marked down for (rules 5 and 6); retracing a spelling (rule 5); the record keeper (the tip under rule 8); and the preface, which leaves every local bee free to set its own rules. That spellers with the same total went out in the same round follows from rules 7 and 8 and was worked out here. Licence: own work

How it works

This spelling bee score sheet is the record keeper's. Mark every word right or missed, write the word that put a speller out, and the sheet counts the words each one spelled right.

Mark each turn as the judges rule

Type the spellers' names over Speller 1, Speller 2 and so on, in the order they spell. After each turn, type 1 or an x in that round's box when the spelling is accepted and 0 when it is not, then write the missed word in the last box of the row. Ten spellers are on the sheet; Add a speller takes it to 24.

A small bee, or one that runs long

Small bee: more rounds turns the sheet for 2 to 12 spellers: names across the top and a line for each round, with Add a round under the last for as long as the bee runs. A class bee still going after round ten carries on there with the spellers left in.

  • Print blank sheet prints the rows on screen. Up to 24 spellers and the rules under them fit one page.
  • Running a class bee where nobody goes out? Keep marking every speller each round. The most words right wins.

Questions and answers

How do you score a spelling bee?

Not in points. Each turn is right or wrong, a wrong spelling puts the speller out, and the rounds go on until one speller is left. The record shows who was still in at each round and the word each speller missed.

What happens if everyone misspells in a round?

Nobody goes out. Under the rules suggested for local bees, when no speller left in the bee spells correctly in a round, all of them stay in and a new round begins.

How is the winner of a spelling bee decided?

In the 2027 suggested rules, the one speller who is right in a round where every other speller misses is the champion at once. The 2020 edition asked that speller for one more word first, so check which your bee follows.

How are second and third place decided?

Spellers who go out in the same round are tied for the same place, so equal totals on this sheet share it. Whether to break the tie, and how, is left to the bee's officials.
