Good Hangman Words by Topic, Length and Difficulty: how it works

Good hangman words are ones the whole table can spell, in a length that gives the guesser a fair fight. This hangman words list has 428 words and 51 phrases in 14 topics, each with a letter count, a guess level and a clue. Press New word and keep the phone to yourself.

Set a word from one phone

The card shows a word, its letter count, a level and a clue to read aloud when the table is stuck. Draw the blanks on paper. The pills keep the deal to one topic: outer space hangman words include all eight planets, and two pills follow the calendar, Valentine's Day hangman words (Bouquet, Serenade) and St Patrick's Day hangman words (Shamrock, Limerick). Deal 5 or 10, tap Lock on the ones you like, then Print.

Long words are easy, short ones are hard

Every word was played by a simulated guesser that knows a dictionary and always calls the likeliest letter. Easy means two misses or fewer, hard means six or more. The 32 four-letter words cost it 7.4 misses on average, the 10 twelve-letter words 0.3. A 2010 Wolfram Research study of about 15 million simulated games found the same. Among food hangman words Pizza and Waffle scored hard while Cheeseburger cost one miss, and 11 of the 32 nature hangman words scored hard, Moss, Cave and Dune among them.

Tips

  • Agree the number of misses first, and draw something friendly in place of a gallows: cross apples off a tree or take slices from a pie.
  • Open with animal hangman words. Everyone knows the topic, so guessers think in whole words instead of reciting the alphabet.
  • E, T, A, O, I, N is the order for running text. Across dictionary words, H falls from eighth place to fifteenth and R climbs to third, so call R early.

How this list was compiled: Own selection by the Game Night Generator editors, written for this page on 2026-09-18 and screened against the site's clean-deck rules: nothing sexual, no alcohol, drugs, gambling or gore, no real living people, no brand names. Words with two common spellings were left out. Each single word was scored by our own simulation on 2026-09-18: a guesser who knows the word's length and the 210,773 lower-case entries of the Webster's Second word list that ships with macOS always calls the letter found in the most words that still fit. x.misses is the number of wrong calls it made; easy is 0 to 2, medium 3 to 5, hard 6 or more. Phrases are not scored. The method follows Jon McLoone's 2010 study, https://blog.wolfram.com/2010/08/13/25-best-hangman-words/ (read 2026-09-18). Facts in the clues were checked on Wikipedia on 2026-09-18: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick%27s_Day (17 March, shamrock, wearing green, parades, pipe bands, the green harp flag), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leprechaun (shoemaker, pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, mischief), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentine%27s_Day (February 14, heart shape, winged Cupid, red roses, school children's cards), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_System (eight planets and their order, Jupiter the largest, Neptune the most distant, Pluto a dwarf planet, iron oxide on Mars) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methuselah (969 years).
