  • Before or After the Baby The host lists ten things from the past two years, such as a movie release, a family wedding, a big storm or the day the car died. For each one, tables decide whether it happened before or after the baby was born. New parents find this harder than anyone. Players: 4 to 40, by table. Time: 10 min.   • Find Someone Who, First Birthday Edition Both sides of the family are often meeting properly for the first time. Give each guest a grid of squares to get signed: has changed this baby's diaper, shares the birth month, has known a parent for twenty years, traveled farthest today. One signature per person.   • First Year Back-to-Back The parents sit back to back, each holding one of their own shoes and one of their partner's.   • First Year by the Numbers The parents estimate five numbers from the year: photos on the phone, loads of laundry a week, the longest stretch of sleep, miles on the stroller, and times one picture book has been read. Guests write a guess for each on a board, and the closest guess per line wins. Players: 6 to 50. Time: 10 min. Props: a poster board with five lines and markers.
  • First Year Timeline Quiz The host writes ten firsts on cards, such as first tooth, first plane ride, first haircut and first word, with the real dates on the back. Each table lays its set in order along a ribbon. One point for every card in the right place, and the parents break ties with a story. Players: 4 to 30, by table. Time: 12 min. Props: a set of ten cards and a ribbon per table.
  • First-Year Family Survey A week ahead, the host texts ten relatives one question, such as name something this baby does that makes everyone laugh, and tallies the answers. At the party two teams try to name the most popular answers, scoring a point for each relative who gave it. Three wrong guesses pass the board across. Players: 6 to 20, in two teams. Time: 15 min. Props: the tallied answers on a board or a screen.
  • Happy Birthday, the Quiz Three true-or-false questions before the cake. False: the tune was written as a birthday song. It was published in 1893 as Good Morning to All. True: the birthday words were in print by 1912. True: a court settlement in 2016 put the song in the public domain in the United States. Then sing it. Players: any number. Time: 4 min. Props: none.
  • Name That Lullaby One guest hums the first line of a nursery song and the first table to name it scores. Then the hard round: sing the second verse. Almost nobody knows one, which is the joke. The parents judge, since they have sung every song four hundred times. Players: 4 to 30. Time: 8 min. Props: none.
  • Parent One, Parent Two or Baby Every guest gets three paddles: one for each parent and one for the baby. The host reads a line, such as fell asleep at the dinner table, cried at the first haircut or has worn the same shirt three days running, and guests raise the paddle for who did it. Often it is all three. Players: 6 to 40. Time: 8 min. Props: three paddles or photo cards per guest.
  • True or False: The First Year The host prepares eight statements about the year, half of them invented: slept through a fire alarm, said dog before mama, has been to four states. Stand for true, stay seated for false. Anyone wrong sits out, and the last one standing takes the prize. Players: 6 to 50. Time: 6 min. Props: none.
  • Twelve Months Photo Line-Up Print one photo from each month of the year, leave off the dates and shuffle them. Guests clip the twelve to a string in order from newborn to now. The early months are easy. The middle months are where everyone goes wrong. Players: 2 to 40, a few at a time. Time: 8 min. Props: twelve photos, string and clothespins.
  • Who Knows the Birthday Baby Ten questions only a regular visitor can answer: the song that stops the crying, the food that gets thrown, the name of the stuffed rabbit. Guests write answers, the parents read the key, and the babysitter usually beats both sets of grandparents. Players: 4 to 40. Time: 10 min. Props: answer slips and pens.
  • Whose First Word Was It On arrival each guest writes their own first word, as their family tells it, on a slip with their name on the back. Read the words aloud and let the room guess the owner.   • Baby's Future Job Title Each table studies the baby's current skills and writes a business card to match: Senior Vice President of Throwing Spoons, Director of Waking Up Early. The parents read the cards aloud and pick the one that goes in the baby book. Players: 4 to 40, by table. Time: 8 min. Props: index cards and pens.
  • Build a Modern Grab Table Families in Korea now add a stethoscope, a gavel or a computer mouse to the doljabi table, and the older Chinese custom, zhuazhou, uses a calculator or a ruler. Each guest proposes one object for this baby and what it would mean. The parents choose six, and those go on the table for Guess the Grab. Players: 6 to 30. Time: 10 min. Props: paper and pens.
  • Family Traits Draft Go around the room and draft the traits you hope the baby inherits, one pick each and no repeats: a grandfather's laugh, an aunt's sense of direction, a father's patience with flat-pack furniture. Compliments only. It turns into a round of toasts to the relatives. Players: 5 to 25. Time: 10 min. Props: none.
  • First Steps Calendar Pin up a calendar for the next six months. Each guest initials the day they think the first unaided steps will happen. If the baby already walks, make it the first three-word sentence. The parents text the winner a video on the day. Players: 6 to 60. Time: 5 min. Props: a wall calendar and a pen.
  • Guess the Grab Borrowed, with credit, from the Korean doljabi: a one-year-old sits before a table of objects, and the first one picked up is said to show where luck lies. Yarn stands for long life, a book for learning, a wallet for wealth, a microphone for the stage. Guests vote by ballot first. Large, soft objects only. Players: 6 to 50. Time: 10 min. Props: six large safe objects and ballots.

  • Time Capsule Prediction Cards Each guest fills in a card: at 18 you will be this tall, your best subject will be, your first job will be, you will get around by.   • Toy or Box Set a newly unwrapped toy and its empty box side by side, the same distance from the baby. Guests vote with a show of hands before the release.   • The World at Eighteen Tables agree on five predictions for the year the baby turns 18: the price of a movie ticket, what a phone looks like, the most popular baby name, who is driving the cars, and one thing that no longer exists. Seal the sheets in the time capsule unread. Players: 4 to 40, by table. Time: 12 min. Props: paper, pens and an envelope.

  • Airplane Spoon Landing Pairs sit knee to knee wearing bibs. The feeder is blindfolded and has to land five spoonfuls of applesauce with airplane noises, steered only by the eater saying left, right, up, down. First pair to finish a small bowl wins. Put towels down. Players: 4 to 12, in pairs. Time: 10 min. Props: applesauce, spoons, adult bibs, blindfolds and towels.
  • Diaper Bag Memory Unpack 15 things from the real diaper bag onto a towel: wipes, a spare sock, a teething ring, a crushed snack bar, a single mitten. Guests get one minute to look, then the towel is covered and everyone lists what they saw. For round two, take two things away and ask what went. Players: 4 to 25. Time: 8 min. Props: the diaper bag, a towel, paper and pens.
  • Do Not Wake the Baby A blindfolded listener sits in a chair playing the sleeping baby. One at a time, guests carry a bunch of jingle bells across the room and set it under the chair. If the listener hears a sound and points straight at you, you are out. Silent crossings go through to a final with two bunches. Players: 5 to 20. Time: 12 min. Props: jingle bells, a chair and a blindfold.
  • One-Handed Parent Challenge Hold a large teddy on one hip, the way parents do all day, and with the free hand fold a onesie, zip a small jacket, press the lid on a cup and open a stroller. The clock stops when the stroller clicks. Drop the teddy and you start again. Players: 3 to 12, in turns. Time: 12 min. Props: a teddy, a onesie, a jacket, a lidded cup and a stroller.
  • Pack the Diaper Bag Blindfolded One partner is blindfolded at a table of baby gear mixed with decoys, such as a TV remote, a whisk and a dog toy. The other calls directions but may not touch. Pack the six things on the list and zip the bag. Fastest pair wins, and each decoy packed adds ten seconds. Players: 4 to 16, in pairs. Time: 12 min. Props: a bag, six baby items, six decoys and a blindfold.
  • Pop Song Lullaby Each team draws a loud, fast song everyone knows and has three minutes to turn its chorus into a lullaby: slow, soft and rocking an imaginary baby. The parents judge on how sleepy it made them. Bonus point if the real baby nods off. Players: 6 to 24, in teams. Time: 12 min. Props: none.
  • Shape Sorter Blindfolded Blindfold a player and hand over the baby's own shape sorter with the pieces tipped out. Time how long it takes to post every shape by feel alone. Adults are reliably slower than they expect. Fastest time wins, and the baby gets the toy back. Players: 2 to 12, in turns. Time: 8 min. Props: a shape sorter and a blindfold.
  • Sock Pair Sprint Tip a laundry basket of baby socks onto the table, with a few odd ones mixed in. Each player gets one minute to match and fold as many pairs as they can. Most pairs wins. The parents keep every matched pair, which may be the best present of the day. Players: 2 to 12, in turns. Time: 8 min. Props: a basket of baby socks and a timer.
  • Stroller Slalom Push a stroller with a teddy strapped in around a line of cones and back, holding a full cup of water in the other hand. Add five seconds for every cone touched and ten if the cup comes back less than half full. Run it on grass or a driveway, away from the road. Players: 3 to 15, in turns. Time: 12 min. Props: a stroller, a teddy, cones and a cup of water.
  • Swaddle the Teddy Everyone gets a teddy and a muslin blanket and one demonstration from a parent. On go, swaddle the teddy. A grandparent judges by lifting each bundle by the shoulders: if an arm falls out, you are out. Tightest wrap wins. Players: 3 to 15. Time: 8 min. Props: a teddy and a muslin blanket each.
  • Two People, One Onesie Partners link arms, which leaves each with one free hand, and together dress a doll in a onesie, two socks and a hat. Snaps must be snapped. The fastest pair wins, and parents of actual babies get no head start, because dolls do not kick. Players: 4 to 16, in pairs. Time: 8 min. Props: a doll and a set of baby clothes per pair.

Guessing tables that run themselves 11

  • Baby Food Blind Tasting Set out six jars of baby food with the labels covered and numbered, plus a stack of tasting spoons. Guests taste and write the flavor. Choose blends such as pear and pea, because single fruits are too easy. Ask about allergies on the sign, and use a clean spoon for every taste. Players: 4 to 40. Time: 10 min. Props: six jars of baby food, tasting spoons and answer sheets.
  • Baby or Parent at One Mix photos of the birthday baby with photos of each parent at the same age, all printed in black and white at one size. Guests mark each print as baby, one parent or the other. The reveal settles the argument about who the baby looks like, at least for a year. Players: 6 to 60. Time: 8 min. Props: about nine printed photos and answer sheets.
  • Guest Book Quilt Squares Lay out plain cotton squares and fabric markers. Each guest decorates a square with a drawing, a name and the date. Hold a vote for the best square before they are collected. Someone handy sews them into a play mat or a wall hanging afterwards. Players: 8 to 40. Time: 15 min. Props: cotton squares, fabric markers and cardboard to lean on.
  • Guests as Babies Photo Wall Ask every guest to bring or send a photo of themselves as a baby. Pin the photos up with numbers and leave answer sheets beside them. Guests match numbers to names all afternoon, and the answers are read out before the cake. It gets strangers talking faster than any mixer. Players: 8 to 60. Time: 15 min. Props: guests' baby photos, numbers, answer sheets and pens.
  • How Long Is the Baby Now Hang a ribbon cut to the baby's length at birth. Beside it, leave a spool and scissors. Each guest cuts a ribbon to the length they think the baby is today, without measuring, and tags it with their name. The closest ribbon wins, and the two real ribbons go in the baby book. Players: 6 to 50. Time: 5 min. Props: ribbon, scissors, name tags and a tape measure.
  • How Many Puffs in the Snack Cup Fill a clear snack cup with cereal puffs, counting as you go, and tape the number under the base. Guests write a guess and their name on a slip. The closest guess wins the prize. Keep the cup on a high table, out of reach of the guest of honor. Players: 6 to 60. Time: 3 min. Props: a clear cup of cereal puffs, slips and a pen.
  • Sign the Picture Book Instead of a card, guests sign a page of a picture book. Make it a game: each guest has to pick the page that suits them, such as the uncle who snores on the bear page, and write one line saying why. Read the best three aloud. Players: 6 to 40. Time: 5 min. Props: a hardback picture book and a permanent pen.
  • Ten-Second Message Booth Stand a parent's phone on a tripod in a quiet corner with a bowl of prompt cards: sing one line, give one warning about your dad, show your best silly face. Each guest draws a card and records ten seconds. The clips stay on the parents' phone and nowhere else. Players: 6 to 60. Time: 15 min. Props: a phone, a tripod and prompt cards.
  • Thumbprint Balloon Poster Draw a big number one on a poster with strings rising from it. Each guest presses a thumb on an ink pad, adds a print at the end of a string as a balloon and signs beside it. It takes a minute per guest and hangs in the nursery for years. Players: 6 to 60. Time: 3 min. Props: a poster, washable ink pads, a fine pen and wipes.

  • Advice I Ignored Every guest writes down one piece of parenting advice they were given and cheerfully ignored, unsigned. The parents draw slips from a bowl, read them aloud and guess the author. The slips go home with the parents as permission to ignore advice too. Players: 6 to 30. Time: 12 min. Props: slips, pens and a bowl.
  • Letters to Open at Eighteen Put out good paper, envelopes and a few prompts: what the day you were born was like, what I hope you never stop doing, what your parents were like this year. Guests seal and sign their letters. The game part: each writer also guesses, on the flap, what the reader will be doing at 18. Players: 4 to 60. Time: 15 min. Props: writing paper, envelopes, pens and a keepsake box.
  • One Word for the Year Go around the room. Each guest gives the parents one word for their first year as they saw it from outside, and one sentence of evidence: tireless, because you came to my move with a three-week-old. Someone writes the words down for the baby book. Players: 5 to 25. Time: 8 min. Props: none.
  • Seventeen Birthdays Wish Jar Number 17 cards from 2 to 18 and deal them out. Each guest writes a wish or a piece of advice for the birthday on their card: for age 5, for age 13, for age 16. The parents open one card a year. With more than 17 guests, double up on the teenage years. Players: 8 to 40. Time: 10 min. Props: numbered cards, pens and a jar.

  • The Baby Is the Leader For three minutes every adult copies whatever the baby does: clap, flop onto the rug, crawl under the table, stare at the ceiling fan. Anyone who laughs too hard to keep up, or stays standing while the baby crawls, is out. The last adult still in wins. Players: 4 to 20. Time: 5 min. Props: none.
  • Bubble Pop Count Before the bubbles start, each guest writes down how many the baby will pop in one minute. One adult blows, one counts aloud and one runs the timer. Closest guess wins. Use a tear-free bubble mix, and wipe the floor afterwards because it gets slippery. Players: 4 to 30. Time: 5 min. Props: tear-free bubble mix, slips and a timer.
  • Crawl to Me Three relatives kneel in a row, the same distance from the baby, with empty hands: no phones, keys or snacks. On go they may call, clap and sing. Whoever the baby reaches first wins the round. Best of three. If the baby sits down and claps instead, the baby wins. Players: 3 callers and any audience. Time: 6 min. Props: a clear stretch of clean floor.
  • First Giggle Contest The baby sits on a parent's lap. Each contestant gets twenty seconds to earn a real laugh with faces and noises only, no touching and no toys. A judge with a stopwatch records the fastest giggle. Stop the moment the baby looks fed up. Babies are tough crowds after lunch. Players: 4 to 15. Time: 8 min. Props: none.
  • Peekaboo Around the Circle Adults sit in a circle with the baby in the middle on a parent's lap, and everyone holds a cloth napkin. Go around the circle one peekaboo at a time. Score a point each time yours gets a laugh. After two laps the high score wins, and the baby has had the best ten minutes of the party. Players: 5 to 15. Time: 8 min. Props: a cloth napkin each.
  • Roll It Back Sit in a ring on the floor with the baby and one large soft ball. Roll it gently to the baby and count how many times in a row it comes back, in any direction at all. Before you start, everyone calls a number, and the closest call wins. It is calm enough for the last half hour. Players: 4 to 12. Time: 6 min. Props: one large soft ball.

How it works

First birthday party games for adults solve an odd problem: the guest of honor cannot play and may nap through half the party. These games are for everyone else, from a first-year quiz to a time capsule.

Plan around the nap, not the clock

A one-year-old sets the schedule, so pick games by what the baby is doing. While the baby is awake, choose Games the birthday baby joins in the All games menu, such as Crawl to Me. For the nap, choose Quiet enough for nap time. Put two from Guessing tables that run themselves by the door for late arrivals.

Where the grab table comes from

Guess the Grab borrows from the doljabi, part of the Korean first birthday. The child sits before a table of objects, and the first one picked up is said to show where luck lies. It is based on an older Chinese custom, zhuazhou. If this is your family's tradition, follow your elders, not this page.

  • Only the parents have the answers, so write the quiz key and the prediction cards by hand at home.
  • For any game on the floor, swap coins for a wallet, and keep balloons, pens and marbles out of reach.

Questions and answers

Which games can the baby take part in?

The ones under Games the birthday baby joins, such as Guess the Grab, Toy or Box and Crawl to Me. The adults do the guessing. Stop as soon as the baby looks tired, and count that as the baby winning.

Do these work if most guests have no kids?

Yes, and the baby-skill races are funnier that way. Swaddle the Teddy, Sock Pair Sprint and Two People, One Onesie need no experience. Nothing here quizzes guests on child care or compares babies.

What can guests do at an open house first birthday?

Side-table games run all afternoon without a host: Guests as Babies Photo Wall, Weigh the Diaper Bag and First Steps Calendar. Read the results out when the cake is cut.
