How it works
Every card is a question for the person whose birthday it is. These 100 birthday questions for adults cover the year just gone, the year ahead and birthdays past, with 30 light ones and a set each for turning 30, 40, 50 and 60.
Start with the fun birthday questions
Under Topic or milestone, Fun birthday questions leaves 30 light cards a coworker could ask: what is the correct birthday cake, and what is an imposter? The year just gone (16 cards) and The year ahead (12) suit the table once the plates are cleared. Easy has 50 cards, Medium 34 and Hard 16.
Turning 30, 40, 50 or 60
Each milestone pill leaves 8 cards about the decade just finished and the one starting. Memory researchers describe a reminiscence bump: adults over forty recall more from about ages 10 to 30 than from later years, and it is the happy events that stand out. Birthdays past (10 cards) and the sets from 40 up reach back there.
Tips
- At a big table, pass the phone: each guest deals one card to the birthday person, so the questions come from everyone, not one interviewer.
- Writing a card or a toast? Press a topic, then Copy the list, and paste the questions into your notes to pick three.
- Ask the same three cards every birthday and write the answers inside the card. Next year, read last year's answers back first.
Questions and answers
What are fun birthday questions to ask an adult?
Ones with no wrong answer and no age joke. Try What birthday rule should be law? or What does the birthday card aisle get wrong about your age? The fun set holds 30 like these, and 28 of them are Easy.
What do you ask someone turning 30, 40, 50 or 60?
About the decade they are leaving and the one ahead. Turning 30 asks What did your twenties get right? Turning 60 and up asks What do you get away with at your age that you could not before? Each set has 8 cards.
Can I ask these at a coworker's birthday?
Yes, from the fun set on Easy. No card asks about drinking, dating, weight, looks or health, and none treats an age as bad news. Leave Hard, 16 reflective cards such as What have you stopped apologizing for?, to close friends and family.
Can I print the questions for a party?
Yes. Print questions under the card prints the topic you picked, or all 100, as slips to cut apart, each with its follow-up. Put them in a bowl by the cake and let guests draw. There is no fill-in interview sheet.
