Canasta Score Sheet With the Bonuses and Red Threes Worked Out: how it works
This canasta score sheet keeps a classic game to 5,000 one hand at a time. Type your canasta bonuses, your red threes, 100 or 200 for going out, and your card points. The sheet adds the hand, keeps a running total for each side and marks the first to reach 5,000.
Score a hand in four small boxes
Partners share a column. Press Add a side for a third. When a hand ends, fill its row. Canasta pts takes your bonus total: 500 for each natural canasta, 300 for each mixed. Red 3s takes a count, and the sheet turns four of them into 800. Card pts is what you melded minus what you were caught holding, so it can be negative. A bonus no table can score, such as 400 or 700, is flagged and still kept.
The opening meld and the red three trap
Your opening meld depends on your own total before the deal: 50 points of cards up to 1,495, 90 from 1,500 and 120 from 3,000. Bonuses never count toward it, so a natural canasta of fives is 35, not 535. Red threes are worth 100 each once your side has melded. If the hand ends before you meld anything, they count against you: type -2 for two and the sheet takes 200 off.
Tips
- Print blank sheet gives a printable canasta score sheet on Letter or A4, with the opening meld table in the key.
- Count one hand, line by line counts canastas and melded cards by rank, then subtracts what was left in hand.
- Modern American game to 8,500 has its own key: opening melds of 125, 155 and 180, and 2,500 for a canasta of sevens.
Questions and answers
Do the cards inside a canasta count as well as the bonus?
Yes. The 500 or 300 comes on top of the cards. A natural canasta of seven kings is 500 plus 70 in card points: put 500 in Canasta pts and count the 70 with your other melded cards.
Does this work as a ponytail canasta score sheet?
Only as a ledger. We could not check ponytail canasta's bonus values against a source we trust, so the key does not print them. Open the Modern American sheet, work out each hand from your group's rule card and type the result.
What changes with two or three players?
Everyone plays alone. Two players get 15 cards each, draw two cards a turn, discard one and need two canastas to go out. Three players get 13 cards each and also draw two. Scoring is unchanged, though one widely played three-hand version runs to 7,500.
