Example, filled in with our words

Short: Mr. and Mrs. Wright Get the Nursery Ready

Before we start, one thing to know: the last name in this story sounds like a direction. Whenever you hear it, pass that way.

Mr. and Mrs. WRIGHT of Maple Grove had three weeks to go and one small room to finish.

Mr. WRIGHT painted the wall on the LEFT a soft yellow. Mrs. WRIGHT stood back and looked. "Lovely," she said. "Now the other three."

He did the other three. By then the first one looked a little pale, so he did that one again.

The rocking chair went by the window. Then it went LEFT, out of the sun. Then it went back, because that was where the outlet was, for the lamp.

They hung the mobile over the spot where the crib would go. Then the crib arrived, and the only place it fit was somewhere else. There was one nail LEFT in the box, so the mobile moved too.

On Saturday Aunt Carol came by with something for the baby: a stuffed giraffe. Nobody could say where it belonged. For now it is on the shelf, on the LEFT.

The room is ready. Priya, yours will be too, sooner than you think. Whatever each of you is holding now is yours to keep.

How it works

In a left right baby shower game every guest holds a small gift, or the room shares one prize, and passes it at each LEFT or RIGHT. Press Start: give me 4 words to put the parent-to-be in the first story.

How to play

Seat three or more guests in a circle. Give each a small wrapped gift, or hand one prize to anyone. Read slowly: at every LEFT or RIGHT in capitals, whatever is held moves one seat that way. After the last line, each guest keeps what they hold.

The Mr. and Mrs. Wright baby shower game

Two tellings, short and long, follow Mr. and Mrs. WRIGHT as they get the nursery ready. Each opens with the one rule: the name WRIGHT is a pass, the same as RIGHT. The short telling has 7 passes, the long one 12.

Tips
  • The Hand-Me-Down Boxes is written for a sprinkle, a shower for a second baby.
  • Type sun hat, not a sun hat: the story adds a or an.

Questions and answers

Which story works for a co-ed baby shower?

The Stroller That Would Not Fold. It asks for two parents-to-be, your town and a guest who is sure they can fix it, and it has 7 passes in about 2 minutes.

Do we pass gifts or one prize?

Either. If every guest brought a wrapped gift to swap, pass them all. If the gifts are for the baby, pass one small prize: whoever holds it at the last line keeps it.

Is there a rhymed story?

Yes. The Diaper Bag Rhyme has 13 couplets, about 2 minutes and 7 passes. It asks for the parent-to-be, your town and one thing for a baby.

Is this the Wright family story that gets passed around?

No. The two Wright tellings here are new stories on the same surname pun, not the text that gets passed around.

Can I print the story?

Yes. Pick it from the Story list, type the names it asks for and press Print. The sheet carries only the story, with LEFT and RIGHT in capitals.

How these stories were written: All five stories were written for this site in October 2026. None is adapted from a circulating left right story: the two Wright tellings reuse only the old surname pun, in a new plot. The names are the ones you type, or samples; no real person appears. Pass counts are counted by script from the final text. Licence: own work
