Short: The Rabbit Who Went the Other Way

There was once a rabbit in Clover Hill who had one job a year and one small problem. The rabbit could not tell one paw from the other.

It had never mattered much. A rabbit hops forward, mostly. But this spring the rabbit was handed a basket of eggs and a note from Grandma Rose. The note said: Hide these in the yard. Start at the gate and turn LEFT.

The rabbit looked at one paw. The rabbit looked at the other paw. They looked the same.

"RIGHT," said the rabbit, which was a guess, and went that way.

That is how six eggs came to be hidden in the neighbor's mailbox.

The rabbit read the note again. Go past the tree, it said, and LEFT at the swing. The rabbit went past the tree, thought hard, and hopped RIGHT into the birdbath.

Two eggs went under the hose. One went in a boot. One went in Cousin Ned's coat pocket, because Cousin Ned was standing very still at the time.

By sunrise there was not one egg LEFT in the basket, and not one was where the note said. The rabbit went home to bed.

The hunt that morning took three hours. People found eggs in places no egg had ever been. Cousin Ned found one at lunch, RIGHT in the pocket, and said it was the best hunt in years.

So Grandma Rose sent the rabbit a new note. It said: Same again next spring. Go any way you like.

Happy Easter. Whatever you are LEFT holding is yours to keep.
