Short: The Piñata

At Mia's birthday party in Pine Lake, the piñata hung from the big tree, and it was shaped like a star. Aunt Lena tied on the blindfold, turned Mia around three times and handed over the stick.

"Where is it?" said Mia.

Everybody answered at once.

"LEFT," shouted half the party.

"RIGHT," shouted the other half, who were standing on the other side.

Mia swung LEFT. The stick found nothing but air. Mia swung RIGHT, and hit the tree, and the tree did not mind.

"Higher," said someone. "Lower," said someone else. The dog barked, which did not help.

So Mia stopped, and stood very still, and listened. There was a small creak, up and to the LEFT, where the rope rubbed on the branch.

One step. One swing.

Crack.

It rained candy. It rained so much candy that for a moment nobody moved. Then everybody moved. Uncle Theo had brought a hat for exactly this and filled it to the brim.

When the grass was clear, Mia pulled off the blindfold and looked around. There was one piece LEFT in the grass. It was the best one, the kind in gold paper, and it was RIGHT at the toe of Mia's shoe.

Happy birthday, Mia. Whatever you are holding now is yours to keep.

Short: The Piñata

How it works

In a left right game for a birthday party, every guest holds a gift or party favor and passes it one seat at each LEFT or RIGHT. Press Start: give me 4 words to put your names in The Piñata.

How to play

Hand every guest one wrapped favor, or have each bring a small gift, and sit three or more in a circle. Read slowly. Each LEFT or RIGHT in capitals sends everything one seat that way. At the last line, guests open what they are holding.

Pick a story

The Piñata is the shortest, and the room can shout its first two cues along with the party in the story. The Goody Bags is written for passing favors. The Hidden Present is the birthday morning. The Present That Would Not Wrap suits a grown-up's party. One More Year is 12 rhymed couplets.

  • One gift for the birthday person? Start it with the guest on their right: every story but The Goody Bags ends one seat left.
  • Another birthday story, The Cake Pickup, is on the left right party game page in a short and a long cut.

Questions and answers

How long does a birthday left right game take?

About 2 to 3 minutes a story. The Piñata, The Goody Bags and the rhyme take about 2 minutes, with 7, 6 and 7 passes. The Hidden Present and The Present That Would Not Wrap take about 3, with 7 each.

What do you pass in a left right game at a birthday party?

Wrapped party favors of about equal value, one a guest, or small gifts the guests bring.

How many guests do you need?

Three or more. Every story ends one or two seats from where it starts, so with three guests or thirty nobody finishes with the favor they started with.

How these stories were written: All five stories were written for this site in October 2026, and none is adapted from a left right story in circulation. The birthday person, the host and the town are the names you type, or samples; no real person appears. Pass counts are counted by script from the final text. Licence: own work
