Short: Every Box Said Kitchen
When Marisol moved to the new place in Willow Creek, Uncle Pete offered to help pack. Uncle Pete is a fast packer. Uncle Pete also had one marker and, as it turned out, one idea.
On moving day the truck doors opened, and there were forty boxes inside. Every one of them said Kitchen.
"They cannot all be kitchen," said Marisol.
"Some of them are," said Uncle Pete.
So they made a plan. Marisol would open each box at the door and point. Bedroom boxes went up the stairs and LEFT. Bathroom boxes went up the stairs and RIGHT. Kitchen boxes, if there were any, went on down the hall.
The first box that said Kitchen had shoes in it. Up and LEFT. The second had towels. Up and RIGHT. The third had books, and the fourth had more books, and nobody had picked a room for books, so those were LEFT in the hall.
Box nine had a lamp, a winter coat and one roller skate.
"What room is that?" said Uncle Pete.
"That is the room we do not have," said Marisol.
By evening the truck was empty and the hall was full. They sat down on two boxes and ordered a pizza, and when it came, Marisol went to find a plate.
There were no plates. There were no forks, no cups and no kettle. Of forty boxes that said Kitchen, not one had been the kitchen.
Then Uncle Pete remembered. The kitchen things were in the car, in one last box. Uncle Pete had packed it with care and labeled it RIGHT on the lid. It said Fragile.
Welcome home, Marisol. Whatever you are LEFT holding is yours to keep.
