Scoring key

Made bid: 10 points per trick bid 10 x bid
Partners add their two bids into one team bid. Win at least that many tricks between you and the team scores 10 points for each trick bid.
Bag: each trick over the team bid +1
An overtrick is called a bag or sandbag and adds 1 point. A team that bids 5 and wins 8 scores 53.
Set: fewer tricks than the team bid -10 x bid
A team that falls short loses 10 points for each trick it bid, so a bid of 5 that wins 4 scores minus 50.
Ten bags cost the team 100 points −100
The penalty lands each time a team's bags reach ten, and bags beyond ten carry over toward the next ten. Some tables play with no bag penalty, and then a bag is simply worth its 1 point: the second sheet scores it that way.
Nil: a bid to win no tricks at all 100 / -100
A nil that succeeds adds 100 to the team score and one that fails takes 100 off. The partner's bid is scored separately either way.
Blind nil: bid before you look at your cards 200 / -200
Worth 200 made and minus 200 failed. It is usually allowed only to a side that is losing by at least 100 points, and the bidder then swaps two cards with their partner.
When a nil fails: the bidder's tricks
The usual rule is that they do not count toward the partner's bid but do count as bags. Some tables let them count toward the partner's bid: if yours does, add them to Won and leave the failed nil row empty.
First team to 500 wins the game 500
If both teams reach 500 in the same hand, the higher score wins. Some tables play to 300 or to 1,000, and some end the game when a team falls to minus 500.
Bids run from 0 to 13 and nobody may pass 0 to 13
A bid does not have to beat the one before it. A bid of 0 is nil, so an ordinary bid is at least 1. Some tables make each team bid at least 4.
Check: 13 tricks in every hand 13
The Won boxes of both teams come to 13. In a hand where a nil failed, count that bidder's tricks as well.

Spades Score Sheet With Bids, Bags and the 10-Bag Penalty: how it works

This free spades score sheet takes each hand's team bid and tricks won and works out the score: 10 points per trick bid, 1 per bag, or minus 10 per trick bid when a team is set. It counts bags across the game, takes off 100 at every ten and says when a team reaches 500.

Score a hand in two boxes

Rename the two headings with your team names. After the bidding, add the partners' bids together and type the total under Bid. When the hand ends, type the tricks the team took under Won. A bid of 5 that wins 8 scores 53: 50 for the bid and 3 bags. Four hands show at first, and a new line opens each time you fill the last one.

Nil bids and the bag rows

A partner who bids nil stays out of the team bid. Type the other partner's bid and tricks, then 100 in the Nil +/- box if the nil was made or -100 if it failed. A blind nil is 200 or -200. Bags toward the next ten shows how close each team is to losing 100. Read the score from the Spades game total row: the running figure under each hand leaves the bag penalty out.

Tips

  • For a spades score sheet PDF, press Print blank sheet and choose Save as PDF in the print window. The scoring key prints under the grid.
  • Before the next deal, check that the two Won boxes come to 13. Tricks taken by a failed nil bidder count in that 13.
  • Three at the table? Switch to Three players: 17 cards each. Nobody has a partner, and every trick over your bid costs 10.

Questions and answers

What happens when a team reaches ten bags?

The team loses 100 points, and bags beyond ten carry over toward the next ten. The bag penalty row takes it off for you. Some tables play without the penalty: switch to Partners: no bag penalty and a bag is worth its 1 point.

How do we score a failed nil?

The team loses 100, and the partner's bid is still scored on its own. Usually the nil bidder's tricks do not count toward that bid but do count as bags, so add them to the failed nil row. If your table counts them toward the bid, put them in Won.

What if both teams pass 500 in the same hand?

The higher score wins. Some tables play to 300 or to 1,000, and some end the game when a team falls to minus 500. The sheet only announces 500, so for any other target watch the game total row.

Partnership hands: bid, tricks won and nil 1

  • Spades hand One line per hand. Bid is the team bid: both partners' bids added together, leaving out a partner who bid nil. Won is the tricks that count toward that bid. The Nil box is only for a hand with a nil bid in it: type 100 for a nil that was made and -100 for one that failed, or 200 and -200 for a blind nil.

Bags, the 100 penalty and the game total 6

  • Bag penalty: minus 100 per ten bags Taken off each time the bags reach ten. Bags beyond ten carry on toward the next ten.
  • Bags so far, all hands Every trick won beyond the team bid in a hand that made its bid, plus the tricks taken by a failed nil bidder.
  • Bags toward the next ten What is left after each full ten is taken away. At 9 the next bag costs the team 100.
  • Game total with no bag penalty, to 500 For tables that play without the ten-bag penalty: every hand plus the failed nil tricks, with nothing taken off for bags.
  • Spades game total, first team to 500 Every hand, the failed nil tricks and the bag penalty. This is the score to read out: the running figure under each hand leaves the bag penalty out.
  • Tricks taken by a failed nil bidder A count for the whole game, not one hand. Under the usual rule these tricks do not help make the partner's bid, so leave them out of Won and add them here. Each one scores 1 point and counts as a bag.

Three-player game: 17 cards each 2

  • Solo spades hand Three players, 17 tricks a hand and nobody has a partner. Type your own bid and the tricks you won. A made bid scores 10 per trick bid, less 10 for every trick over it.
  • Three-player total, highest past the target Every hand added together. Agree a target before the first deal. Once anyone passes it, the highest score wins.

Scoring key 12

  • Bag: each trick over the team bid An overtrick is called a bag or sandbag and adds 1 point. A team that bids 5 and wins 8 scores 53.
  • Bids run from 0 to 13 and nobody may pass A bid does not have to beat the one before it. A bid of 0 is nil, so an ordinary bid is at least 1. Some tables make each team bid at least 4.
  • Blind nil: bid before you look at your cards Worth 200 made and minus 200 failed. It is usually allowed only to a side that is losing by at least 100 points, and the bidder then swaps two cards with their partner.
  • Check: 13 tricks in every hand The Won boxes of both teams come to 13. In a hand where a nil failed, count that bidder's tricks as well.
  • First team to 500 wins the game If both teams reach 500 in the same hand, the higher score wins. Some tables play to 300 or to 1,000, and some end the game when a team falls to minus 500.
  • Made bid: 10 points per trick bid Partners add their two bids into one team bid. Win at least that many tricks between you and the team scores 10 points for each trick bid.
  • Nil: a bid to win no tricks at all A nil that succeeds adds 100 to the team score and one that fails takes 100 off. The partner's bid is scored separately either way.
  • Set: fewer tricks than the team bid A team that falls short loses 10 points for each trick it bid, so a bid of 5 that wins 4 scores minus 50.
  • Ten bags cost the team 100 points The penalty lands each time a team's bags reach ten, and bags beyond ten carry over toward the next ten. Some tables play with no bag penalty, and then a bag is simply worth its 1 point: the second sheet scores it that way.
  • Three players: 17 cards each, no partners The one card left over is out of play for that deal. The game runs to an agreed target, usually 300, 400 or 500, and when one or more players pass it the highest score wins.
  • Three players: a trick over the bid costs 10 Bid 4 and win 5 and you score 30 in place of 40. Bid 3 and win 7 and you score minus 10. Some tables count bags in this game too and take off 100 at ten.
  • When a nil fails: the bidder's tricks The usual rule is that they do not count toward the partner's bid but do count as bags. Some tables let them count toward the partner's bid: if yours does, add them to Won and leave the failed nil row empty.

How this list was compiled: Written by the editors. Spades is a traditional card game with no governing rule book, so the sheet scores the commonest rules and the key says where tables differ. The partnership scoring (10 points per trick bid, 1 point per overtrick or bag, minus 10 per trick bid when set, 100 off for every ten bags with the rest carried over, nil at plus or minus 100 scored apart from the partner's bid, blind nil at plus or minus 200 and usually open only to a side losing by at least 100, the usual rule for the tricks of a failed nil bidder, the game to 500 with the higher score winning if both sides reach it in one deal, and the 300, 1,000 and minus 500 variants) was checked on 2026-09-18 against https://www.pagat.com/auctionwhist/spades.html and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spades_(card_game). The three-player game (17 cards each with one card out of play, 10 per trick bid, 10 off per overtrick, minus 10 per trick bid when short, targets of 300, 400 or 500) was checked the same day against the Spades for Three Players section of the pagat.com page.
