Scoring key

Pips left in your hand count against you 1 per pip
When a round ends, add up every pip on the tiles you still hold and write that number in the row for the round.
Going out scores 0 for the round 0
The player who places their last tile writes 0. Everyone else scores what they are holding.
Blocked round: everyone counts pips
If nobody can play and the boneyard is empty, the round ends and every player scores the pips left in hand.
Blank ends usually count 0 0 or 25
In a common variant each blank scores 25 and the double-blank tile scores 50. Agree which way you play before round one.
Engine steps down one double each round
Round one opens with the highest double in the set. Each later round opens with the next double down, and the double-blank opens the last.
Lowest total after the last round wins
Players may agree to stop after fewer rounds, which is common with sets bigger than a double-9. Agree the number before you start.
Tie-break: most rounds scored 0
If totals tie, the player with the most 0-point rounds wins. Still tied, the lowest single round score other than 0 wins.
Hand size with a double-12 set 15 / 12 / 10
A common deal: up to 4 players draw 15 tiles each, 5 or 6 players draw 12 and 7 or 8 players draw 10. Printed rule sets differ by a tile or two, so follow the leaflet in your box.
A double must be covered
The player who lays a double plays again to cover it. If they cannot, the duty passes to the next player, and each player who fails marks their own train open.
Marker on your train: open to all
If you still cannot play after drawing one tile, your train takes a marker and anyone may play on it. The marker comes off when you next play on your own train.
Partners: add the pips of both hands
With 4, 6 or 8 players in pairs, the team of the player who went out scores 0 and every other team adds both partners' pips.

Mexican Train Score Sheet for Double-12, Double-9 and Double-15 Sets: how it works

This free Mexican train score sheet has a row for every round of the domino game, from the double-12 engine down to the double-blank. Type the pips each player is left holding and the running totals fill in, with the lowest marked as leading. It takes up to 8 players and prints blank with its scoring key.

Fill in a row when the round ends

Press Add a player until everyone has a column, then rename the headings. Each row is named for the double that opens the round, so a standard set starts on the Double-12 row and works down. Whoever placed their last tile types 0. Everyone else types the pips on the tiles still in hand. The sheet shows a running total and keeps your game until you press New game.

Pips, blanks and the tie-break

A tile costs the pips on both ends, so a double-12 caught in your hand is 24 and the 12-11 is 23. Blank ends normally count 0. Some tables score each blank 25 and the double-blank tile 50, so settle that before round one. If totals tie, the player with the most 0-point rounds wins, then the lowest single round score other than 0.

Tips

  • Print blank sheet gives a printable Mexican train score sheet on Letter or A4 with the scoring key. Your browser's print window can save it as a PDF.
  • Short on time? Agree how many rounds to play first. The total row adds whichever rows you have filled.
  • Switch to Double-15 set: 16 rounds for 9 to 12 players, or Double-9 set: 10 rounds for a small set.

Questions and answers

How many tiles does each player draw?

Rule sets differ. A common deal with a double-12 set is 15 tiles each for up to 4 players, 12 each for 5 or 6, and 10 each for 7 or 8. Other printed rules give 11 for 7 or 8 players, or 16 for two. The tiles left over form the boneyard.

Does this Mexican train dominoes score sheet work for partners?

Yes. With 4, 6 or 8 players you can play in pairs. Give each pair one column and press Remove to drop the spares. The team of the player who went out scores 0, even though the partner still holds tiles, and every other team adds both partners' pips.

What do we score when a round is blocked?

A round also ends when nobody can play and the boneyard is empty. Nobody has gone out, so nobody gets a 0 for free: every player counts the pips left in hand and types that in the row for the round.

How this list was compiled: Written by the editors. Mexican train is a traditional domino game with no single rule set, so the sheet prints the commonest values and the key says where tables differ. Scoring (0 for going out, pips left in hand for everyone else, lowest total wins), the engine stepping down one double a round to the double-blank, the option to play fewer rounds, the tie-break, the 25 and 50 blanks variant, partnership scoring, the covering of doubles, the train markers and the set sizes (double-9 for 2 to 7 players, double-12 for 2 to 8, double-15 for 9 to 12) were checked on 2026-09-18 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Train. The 13-game session, the scoring, the blocked round, the markers and the 15, 12 and 10 tile hands were checked the same day against https://www.pagat.com/domino/star/mextrain.html. The round counts for the double-9 set (10) and the double-15 set (16) are the number of doubles in those sets. Licence: own work
