Conversation Starters for Teens, From Car Rides to College: how it works
Ask a fifteen-year-old how school was and you get one word. Ask what trend was everywhere last year and is gone now, and you get an opinion. These 150 conversation starters for teens are written for a parent, teacher or youth leader to ask, in eight groups from car rides to college. Next card deals another.
One card per car ride, not an interview
Deal one card and leave it at that. If it lands flat, press Skip; three questions in a row sound like a quiz. Car rides and dinner has 18 cards, 14 of them Easy, that need no eye contact and no long story. Opinions and hot takes (20) suits a quiet teenager: being asked what adults worry about too much beats being asked about the day.
High school, college and the other groups
High school, minus the grades holds 20 conversation starters for high school students, and none asks about a grade: which class goes fastest, what should high school teach that it does not. College students has 18 conversation starters for college students home for a weekend: what did you pack for college that you never used? The rest are Music, shows and games (22), Friends and weekends (18), Home and family (16) and Plans and what comes next (18).
Tips
Ask in the car, on a walk or while cooking, when nobody has to hold eye contact.
Let an opinion stand. Opinions and hot takes only works if overrated is allowed to mean overrated, with no lecture after.
Hand over the phone. A teenager who deals the cards gets to ask what you got in trouble for at their age.

Who are these conversation starters for teenagers written for?
An adult asking one teenager or a small group: a parent driving, a teacher in advisory, a coach on the bus, a youth leader opening a meeting. Teenagers can deal them to each other too; Friends and weekends and Music, shows and games need no adult in the room.
Which topics are left out?
Grades, dating, bodies, mental health, money, politics and religion. A random card is the wrong way into any of those. The nearest the deck comes is Hard: 16 cards, such as how do you decide what is worth stressing about, that ask for an opinion and never a confession.
What if every card gets an I don't know?
Answer it yourself first, in two sentences, then ask again. Stay on Easy, 56 cards that take a few words: what should we listen to for the rest of this drive? One card a day is plenty. The follow-ups are in the list under the deck.

The questions are worded for an adult (a parent, teacher, coach or youth leader) to ask a teenager, and one group is worded for a college student home for a visit. Every line was screened against the site blocklist: nothing sexual or romantic, no crushes or dating, no alcohol or drugs, no self-harm, nothing about mental health, a teenager's body, weight or looks, no money worries, no politics or religion, and no real people. Questions about grades were left out on purpose; the school group asks about the day, not the report card.
