Questions and answers
Who invented ice cream?
Nobody knows. The origins of frozen desserts are obscure, and some sources begin the story in ancient Persia around 550 BC. The tales that credit Marco Polo, Catherine de' Medici or Charles I have no evidence behind them.
When was the ice cream cone invented?
Cones were served in the 19th century: a cookbook of 1888 has an early mention of an edible cone, a cornet made with almonds. Their popularity grew greatly at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.
What is gelato?
Gelato, Italian for frozen, is Italian ice cream. It is made from whole milk, sugar, sometimes eggs, and natural flavorings, and much of it is still made by hand and flavored by each shop.
