How it works

These book club ice breakers are 80 questions for the first ten minutes of a meeting, in four sets of 20. None names a book, so the set called This month's book fits whatever the club read.

Pick the set for tonight

A new club starts on First meeting: nobody needs to have read anything yet. Reading life suits a club that meets every month. Once everyone has finished, This month's book opens the talk: "Where did you stop the first time you put it down?"

Book club icebreaker questions without a list on paper

Keep the page open on one screen, read a card, and let the person on your left answer first. Press Next card past any card the club has already had.

Tips
  • Save "Score it out of ten, then give one reason" for last: the scores start the real discussion.

Questions and answers

What are good book club ice breakers?

Questions anyone can answer in a sentence, with or without finishing the book: which character you would invite to dinner, what weather matches the book, or which scene you would cut as the editor.

How do you start a first book club meeting?

Go round once with a First meeting card, such as describing the last book you finished in five words. Then agree how the next book gets picked before anyone talks about this one.

What if someone has not finished the book?

Stay on First meeting, Reading life or Just for fun until they have had their say. The This month's book cards ask about scenes and endings, so they come last.

How this list was compiled: Own work: 80 questions written by the Game Night Generator editors for this page in September 2026, in four sets of 20 (First meeting, Reading life, This month's book, Just for fun). No list was copied. The This month's book cards name no book, so they fit whatever the club read. No card names a book, author, film or brand, asks where someone lives or grew up, or asks about money, and every card was screened against the site's clean-deck rules. Licence: own work
