  • Blindfold Egg Walk Stage dancers in the 1700s crossed a floor of eggs blindfolded. Lay 12 plastic eggs in a grid. One child wears the blindfold and a partner talks them across at a walk: left a bit, big step, stop. An adult walks beside the blindfolded child. Each egg touched adds five seconds. Swap roles, and the fastest pair wins. Players: 4 to 12 in pairs, ages 5 and up. Time: 12 min. Props: 12 plastic eggs, a blindfold and a timer.
  • Bowl and Circle Egg Trick A painting from 1552 called The Egg Dance shows this challenge. Standing inside a chalk circle and using feet only, roll an egg out of a bowl, then flip the bowl over to cover the egg, without stepping out. Use a plastic bowl and a wooden egg, and time each try. Let the adults have a go too. Players: 2 to 10, ages 6 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: a plastic bowl, a wooden egg and chalk or string for the circle.
  • Chocolate Egg Jarping Egg tapping is played across Europe: two players tap their eggs together at the pointed ends, and the egg that cracks loses. England calls it jarping and has held a world championship every Easter Sunday since 1983. Play with foil-wrapped hollow chocolate eggs. If yours cracks, you eat it. Players: 2 to 16, ages 4 and up.   • Egg Bowling at the Row In Egypt, children bowl colored eggs at a row of eggs and claim what they crack. The party version has no cracking: stand six plastic eggs on bottle caps in a row and bowl a wooden egg at them from eight steps away. Knock one off its cap and you keep it until the row is reset. Players: 2 to 10, ages 4 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: six plastic eggs, six bottle caps and a wooden egg.
  • The Egg Dance The egg dance is a traditional Easter game: eggs are laid on the ground and dancers move among them, disturbing as few as they can. Scatter 20 plastic eggs on a rug, play a song and send in four dancers at a time. Each egg kicked costs a point, so the most careful dancer wins. Players: 4 to 16, ages 4 and up. Time: 10 min.   • Hop-Egg An old English Easter game: put an egg on the ground and hop around it on one foot without touching it. Party version: a line of plastic eggs and one child at a time hopping a slalom through them and back. Touch an egg and the next hopper goes. Under-fives may use two feet.   • Lithuanian Egg Roll for Keeps In Lithuania, a player keeps any egg that their rolled egg touches. Prop a board on a cushion as a ramp and scatter a dozen plastic eggs at the bottom.   • Long Spoon Egg Roll At the White House Easter Egg Roll, held on the lawn on Easter Monday since 1878, children use a long-handled spoon to roll an egg through the grass. Egg hunts with a twist 12

  • Bunny Trail Footprints Cut paw prints from paper and lay a trail through the house or yard, with an egg every few steps and the baskets waiting at the end. For older children, make the trail fork once into a dead end. For three-year-olds, following the trail is the whole game. Players: 2 to 12, ages 3 and up. Time: 15 min. Props: paper paw prints, plastic eggs and baskets.
  • Clue Trail to the Basket Each child or team follows five rhyming clues, one leading to the next, with the basket at the end of the trail. Put the clues inside numbered eggs so nobody can skip ahead. Pair each non-reader with an older child who reads the clue aloud. Players: 2 to 12, ages 5 and up. Time: 20 min. Props: five clues per trail, numbered plastic eggs and baskets.
  • Egg Shop Trade-In Fill the hunt eggs with paper tickets and no candy. Afterwards every child trades tickets at a table shop run by an adult: five tickets for a chocolate bunny, two for stickers. Price it so everyone can afford the same haul. It solves allergies too, because the shop stocks something for each child. Players: 3 to 25, ages 3 and up. Time: 15 min. Props: plastic eggs, paper tickets and a table of prizes.
  • Glow Egg Hunt at Dusk Snap a small glow bracelet into each plastic egg and hide them as the light goes, or in a darkened room. Glowing eggs are easy to spot, so hide them higher and deeper than usual. Count the eggs out and back in, and walk the route first to clear anything a child could trip on. Players: 3 to 15, ages 5 and up. Time: 15 min. Props: plastic eggs and small glow bracelets.
  • Golden Egg Finale When the main hunt is over, gather everyone back at the start and announce one last egg, a gold one, hidden somewhere much harder. The finder chooses the next game. It gives the older children a real search and ends the scramble on a single cheer. Players: 4 to 25, ages 5 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: one gold plastic egg.
  • Grown-Ups Hunt Too Reverse the hunt. The children get five minutes and 20 eggs to hide from the adults, with one rule: every egg must be visible from somewhere without moving anything. Then the adults search while the children give no help at all, loudly. Players: 3 to 15 children plus adults, ages 4 and up. Time: 15 min. Props: 20 plastic eggs.
  • Hot and Cold Egg One child leaves the room while the others hide a single egg. The seeker comes back and the group steers with voices only: cold, warmer, hot, boiling. For very young or shy children this beats a big scramble, because every seeker gets a turn and a cheer. Players: 3 to 10, ages 3 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: one plastic egg.
  • Listen for the Egg Some egg hunts for blind children use eggs that beep. Try hunting by ear: hide a ticking kitchen timer in a basket of eggs somewhere in the room. One at a time, seekers close their eyes or wear a blindfold and find it by sound, with a grown-up walking beside them. Players: 3 to 10, ages 5 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: a ticking kitchen timer, a basket of eggs and a blindfold.
  • One Color Each Egg Hunt Give every child one color and hide the same number of eggs in each. Children may only pick up their own color, so the fastest child cannot sweep the lawn. A three-year-old's eggs can sit in plain sight while a ten-year-old's go up a tree. Players: 3 to 12, ages 3 and up. Time: 15 min. Props: plastic eggs in one color per child and a basket each.
  • One Egg at a Time Relay Hunt Two teams, each with a basket at the start line. One runner per team goes out, finds a single egg and brings it back before the next runner goes. Older children cannot hoard, the little ones get a cheering team, and the hunt lasts three times as long. Players: 6 to 20, ages 4 and up. Time: 15 min. Props: plastic eggs and two baskets.
  • Puzzle Piece Egg Hunt Put one piece of a 24-piece jigsaw in each egg. Nobody can win alone, because the hunt only ends when the picture is complete on the table. Children start counting what is missing and searching together. Keep a list of your hiding places for the last stubborn piece. Players: 3 to 12, ages 4 and up. Time: 20 min. Props: a 24-piece jigsaw and 24 plastic eggs.
  • Spell It Egg Hunt Write one letter on each egg so that together they spell HAPPY EASTER, which takes 11 eggs, or a shorter word for a small group. The hunt ends when the word is laid out in order. Readers help non-readers, and everyone shares the prize. Players: 3 to 11, ages 4 and up. Time: 15 min. Props: 11 plastic eggs and a marker.

  • Bunny Hop Dash Feet together, hands up as ears, hop to the fence and back. Run heats by age so the little ones race each other. For the final, add a rule: freeze whenever the caller shouts fox, and anyone who wobbles takes three hops back. Players: 3 to 20, ages 3 and up. Time: 8 min. Props: none.
  • Bunny Tail Scoop A bowl of cotton balls, an empty bowl, a spoon and a blindfold. Cotton weighs nothing, so the scooper cannot feel whether the spoon is loaded. Each child gets 30 seconds while teammates shout advice. Count the tails that reach the second bowl. Players: 2 to 12, ages 5 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: cotton balls, two bowls, a spoon and a blindfold.
  • Carrot Baton Relay Teams relay a real carrot as the baton: hop out to the marker, run back and hand it over. The carrot has to arrive in one piece, so no throwing. The winning team gets first pick of the carrots and dip at snack time. Players: 6 to 20, ages 4 and up. Time: 8 min. Props: a carrot per team and a marker.
  • Easter Bonnet Dress-Up Relay At the far end sits a basket with a bonnet, bunny ears, a scarf and an apron. Run out, put everything on, hop back, take it all off and hand the pile to the next runner, who dresses, hops out and drops it back in the basket. Players: 6 to 20, ages 4 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: a basket of four dress-up items per team.
  • Egg and Spoon Obstacle Lap A wooden or plastic egg on a dessert spoon, one hand behind your back, and a course: around the tree, over the hose, under the washing line. Drop the egg and you go back to the last obstacle, not to the start. Real eggs stay in the kitchen. Players: 4 to 20, ages 4 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: a spoon and a wooden or plastic egg per racer.
  • Egg Carton Tongs Race Each child has an egg carton and a bowl of 12 pom-poms, and moves them one by one into the cups with kitchen tongs. First full carton wins. The youngest use fingers and a six-cup carton. It is a good calm game just before the food. Players: 2 to 12, ages 3 and up. Time: 6 min. Props: an egg carton, 12 large pom-poms and tongs per child.
  • Fill the Basket Relay Each team has a pile of plastic eggs at the start and an empty basket 20 feet away. Runners carry one egg at a time in whatever way the caller says: on a spoon, between the knees, on the back of a hand. First team to fill its basket wins. Players: 6 to 20, ages 4 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: plastic eggs, spoons and a basket per team.
  • Nose Roll Race On hands and knees, push a plastic egg along with your nose. No hands. An egg never rolls straight, so the race is mostly steering. Keep the course short, about ten feet, and run it on grass or a rug. Players: 2 to 12, ages 3 and up. Time: 6 min. Props: a plastic egg per racer.
  • Waddle Like a Chick Relay Hold a soft ball between your knees and waddle to the marker and back without dropping it, then pass it to the next chick. Drop it and you stop, put it back and carry on from there. Flapping elbows are required. Players: 6 to 20, ages 4 and up. Time: 8 min. Props: a soft ball per team and a marker.

Circle and music games 7

  • Bunny, Bunny, Where Is Your Carrot One child sits facing away with a carrot behind them. The leader points at someone, who creeps up, takes the carrot and hides it behind their back. Everyone chants the question together, and the bunny turns around and gets three guesses at who has it. Players: 5 to 20, ages 4 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: one carrot.
  • Fox in the Rabbit Patch Tag with burrows. Two corners of the lawn are burrows where a rabbit cannot be tagged, but only for a count of five. One fox starts. A tagged rabbit becomes a fox as well, until one rabbit is left, and that rabbit starts the next game as the fox. Players: 6 to 25, ages 5 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: none.
  • Hatching Eggs Everyone curls up small as an egg. The leader walks among them, taps one and names an animal that hatches from an egg: chick, duckling, turtle, crocodile, penguin. That child hatches and moves like it. When everyone is up, ask what else lays eggs. Players: 3 to 20, ages 3 and up. Time: 8 min. Props: none.
  • Musical Nests Scatter cushions as nests, one per child. When the music stops, hop into a nest. Take one nest away each round, but nobody goes out: children share. By the end the whole party is balanced on one cushion, which is the photo you want. Players: 4 to 15, ages 3 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: a cushion each and music.
  • Pass the Egg, Stop the Music Pass a large plastic egg around the circle while the music plays. When it stops, the holder opens the egg and does the action drawn on the slip inside, such as hopping to the door and back, then loads a new slip from the pile. Nobody is out. Players: 5 to 20, ages 3 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: a large plastic egg, picture slips and music.
  • Wake Up, Bunnies Everyone lies down as a sleeping bunny while the leader whispers about the quiet morning. On the words wake up, bunnies, everyone hops until the leader says sleep. The bunny who lies stillest makes the next wake-up call. It settles a room before the cake. Players: 3 to 25, ages 3 and up. Time: 6 min. Props: none.
  • Who Has the Egg One child sits in the middle with eyes closed. The circle passes a plastic egg behind their backs until the leader says stop, and then everyone keeps both hands hidden and looks innocent. The guesser gets three tries. Whoever was holding the egg goes in the middle next. Players: 6 to 20, ages 4 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: one plastic egg.

Table, craft and quiet games 13

  • Bunny Ears Ring Toss One child kneels wearing tall bunny ears on a headband. A partner tosses five paper-plate rings at the ears from four steps away, and the wearer may lean and duck to help. Swap over. The pair with the most ringers wins. Players: 4 to 16 in pairs, ages 4 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: a bunny-ears headband and five paper-plate rings per pair.
  • Easter Bonnet Parade Set out paper plates or plain hats, tissue paper, ribbon, stickers and glue sticks. Children decorate for 15 minutes and then parade once around the room to music. Give every hat an award: tallest, brightest, most chicks, best ribbon. Players: 3 to 25, ages 3 and up. Time: 25 min. Props: plain hats or paper plates, tissue paper, ribbon, stickers and glue sticks.
  • Easter Charades for Kids Act without words: a chick hatching, a bunny hiding eggs, painting an egg, a lamb standing up for the first time, biting the ears off a chocolate bunny. Whisper the idea to non-readers. No teams or scores under age six: whoever guesses goes next. Players: 4 to 20, ages 4 and up. Time: 12 min. Props: none.
  • Easter Picture Bingo Every card shows Easter pictures: a chick, a basket, a tulip, a lamb, a bunny. The caller draws picture slips from a basket and holds each one up, so nobody needs to read. A line wins a sticker, and play goes on to a full card so every child finishes. Players: 3 to 30, ages 3 and up. Time: 15 min. Props: picture bingo cards, call slips and paper squares for markers.
  • Easter True or False, Hop or Crouch Hop for true and crouch for false. True: the first Easter egg bringer, in Germany, was a hare and not a rabbit. True: children have rolled eggs at the White House since 1878. False: that egg roll is on Easter Sunday. It is held on Easter Monday. Players: 4 to 30, ages 5 and up. Time: 5 min. Props: none.
  • Egg Carton Pom-Pom Toss Write a 1, 2 or 3 in each cup of an open egg carton, with the 3s at the back. From a line three steps away, toss five pom-poms and add up the score. Older children toss from farther back, and little ones stand as close as they like. Players: 2 to 12, ages 3 and up. Time: 8 min. Props: an egg carton, a marker and five large pom-poms.
  • Egg Half Memory Match Hide pairs of stickers under 12 upturned plastic egg halves. On your turn, lift two. A matching pair is yours to keep, and if they do not match the halves go back down. Use six halves with small children and up to 24 with older ones. Players: 2 to 6, ages 3 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: plastic egg halves and pairs of stickers.

  • Pin the Tail on the Bunny Draw a big bunny, seen from behind, on a poster. Each child gets a cotton ball on a loop of tape, marked with their own sticker. Blindfold, one gentle turn, then walk and stick with an adult alongside. Closest to the right spot wins. Under-fives can play with eyes shut and no turn. Players: 3 to 20, ages 3 and up. Time: 10 min. Props: a bunny poster, cotton balls, tape, stickers and a blindfold.
  • Roll a Bunny A drawing race with one die. Roll a 1 to draw the body, which has to come first. Then a 2 adds the head, a 3 an ear, a 4 an eye, a 5 the whiskers and a 6 the tail. You need two ears and two eyes. Pass the die around the table. First finished bunny wins. Players: 2 to 8, ages 4 and up. Time: 12 min. Props: one die, paper and pencils.
  • Spring Would You Rather, Jump to a Side Read out a choice and have children jump to one side of the room or the other: bunny ears or chick wings, one giant egg or a hundred tiny ones, hop everywhere or waddle everywhere. Ask one child from each side why they chose it. Players: 4 to 30, ages 4 and up. Time: 8 min. Props: none.
  • Tallest Egg Tower Each child or pair gets 20 plastic egg halves and two minutes to stack the tallest tower that stands for a count of three. Halves nest, wobble and slide, so there is more to it than it looks. Measure with a ruler, and run it twice, because everyone improves. Players: 2 to 16, ages 4 and up. Time: 8 min. Props: 20 plastic egg halves per builder and a ruler.

Make the egg hunt fair

The usual hunt is over in a minute, with one big kid holding most of the eggs. Choose Egg hunts with a twist in the All games menu. One Color Each Egg Hunt gives every child a color, so a three-year-old's eggs can sit in plain sight. Puzzle Piece Egg Hunt cannot be won alone.

Egg games with a long history

Egg tapping was written about in Zagreb in the 1300s. In Britain, eggs are rolled down grassy hills, and in Germany the prize goes to the fastest egg down a track of sticks. Old egg games from around the world holds party versions, and each names its country.

  • Keep real eggs in the kitchen: the FDA says not to eat hard-boiled eggs after hiding or playing with them.
  • Count the eggs before you hide them and list the spots.
  • Easter weather is hard to call, so choose Rainy day, indoors and keep one game as a spare.

Questions and answers

What Easter games work for a mix of ages?

Choose Ages 3 to 5 can play for games a three-year-old can join, such as Musical Nests, where nobody goes out. Run races in heats by age. In a hunt, give each child a color, or pair a non-reader with an older child.

Which Easter games need no props?

How do you run an egg hunt indoors?

Hide plastic eggs at different heights, one room for each age group, and count them out and back in. Hot and Cold Egg needs a single egg and gives every seeker a turn. Clue Trail to the Basket keeps older children busy longer.
