Questions and answers

How many kinds of bear are there?

Eight living species: the brown bear, the polar bear, the American black bear, the Asian black bear, the sun bear, the sloth bear, the spectacled bear and the giant panda.

Do all bears hibernate?

Most, not all. Most species spend the winter in a den for a long hibernation, and northern bears such as the American black bear and the grizzly are among them.

What do bears eat?

Most bears are omnivores that eat more plants than animals: leaves, roots and berries, insects, carrion, meat and fish. The polar bear is mostly carnivorous and the giant panda almost entirely herbivorous.

How were the answers checked?

Each was read on October 3, 2026 in the English Wikipedia article linked under it: Bear, or Sloth bear for one question. Conservation listings, attacks on people, bears kept for shows or farms, and storybook and cartoon bears are left out.

How this list was compiled

Written for this site; nothing was copied from another list. Questions and wrong choices are our own. Each explanation restates, in our own sentences, a fact from the English Wikipedia article named and linked beside the question (https://en.wikipedia.org, text under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license): Bear, and Sloth bear for one question. On October 3, 2026 the passage that states each fact was read in its article before the question was kept. Left out on purpose: conservation listings, attacks on people, bears kept for shows, baiting or farms, bear meat, and storybook, cartoon and toy bears. The giant panda has a pack of its own and is asked here only where the article compares it with the other bears. Levels are our estimate: easy is fair for any table, medium suits people who know the animal, hard will stump most tables. Unofficial, and not advice on keeping, feeding or approaching an animal.
