Read the full guide

Three levels, from riddles for 5 year olds up

Read aloud is for ages 4 to 6: two short lines, and the second one gives the answer away. Easy suits ages 7 and 8 and Medium ages 8 to 10. To keep one level, open the menu under the button and choose More filters. The ages are our judgment.

Six sets to choose from

The same menu keeps one set: Animals, Food, Toys and play, At school, Around the house or Outside. Read a riddle aloud, let everyone guess, then tap Show answer.

Tips
  • Let the child who guessed right make up the next riddle about something in the room.

Questions and answers

What is an easy riddle for 4 to 8 year olds?

One with two clues about a thing the child knows. I pull my head and legs inside my shell, and then I look like a rock: a turtle. I am soft and warm, and you pull me up to your chin: a blanket.

How do you play what am I with kids?

Read the clues aloud one sentence at a time and stop as soon as somebody guesses. A wrong guess earns the next clue. Then swap: the child describes something in the room and the grown-up guesses.

Do these riddles work for children who cannot read yet?

The Read aloud level does. A grown-up or an older child reads the two lines, and the answer is something a four-year-old knows by sight: a cat, a ball, a spoon, the rain.

What makes a good what am I riddle for a child?

An answer the child can point at, a clue about how it looks, a clue about what it does, and a last clue that almost says it. A child who misses the first clue can still get there.

How this list was compiled

Written by the Game Night Generator editors on October 3, 2026: 120 what am I riddles for children of about 4 to 10, in six sets of 20. Every answer is something a child can point at, and every riddle is the editors' own wording; none was copied from a collection. Read aloud riddles are two short lines for children who cannot read yet, and the last line gives the answer away. Easy and Medium riddles have two or three clues. The ages on the three levels are the editors' judgment; nobody tested the riddles with a class. What the riddles say about animals and plants (how a giraffe drinks, how a bear stands, the beaver's teeth, the crocodile's teeth, the snake's tongue, the sloth's claws and toes, the ostrich, how a flamingo feeds, the hedgehog, the earthworm, where peanuts grow) was read in the English Wikipedia articles on them (en.wikipedia.org) on October 3, 2026. Riddles that another list of this site or our sister site's riddle pages already tell were left out. This site is not connected with Wikipedia. Licence: own work
