Who founded Jamestown?

An expedition under Christopher Newport set up the settlement in 1607, paid for by the Virginia Company of London under a charter from King James I. John Smith was the colony's president afterward, until he left in 1609.

Why is Virginia called the Old Dominion?

King Charles II called Virginia one of "our own Dominions" in 1662 or 1663. It is the oldest of the state's nicknames.
