Questions and answers

What are some easy questions in this pack?

Which nickname do the state's large bays give it? What is the hill country in the west of the state called? Beside which pond did Thoreau live alone in a cabin? The answers are the Bay State, the Berkshires and Walden Pond.

Why is Massachusetts called a commonwealth?

The word was chosen in 1779 for the constitution of 1780. At the time it carried the sense of a republic, in contrast to the monarchy the colonies were fighting. It gives the state no special powers.

Does this pack cover Boston?

Only where the state's story needs it. Boston has a pack of its own on this site, so the city's landmarks are asked there.

How were the answers checked?

Each was read on October 3, 2026 in the Wikipedia article Massachusetts, linked under the question. School and crop rankings in that article are left out, and the three-day harvest feast was dropped because the Thanksgiving pack asks it.

How this list was compiled

Written for this site; nothing was copied from another list. Every answer was read on October 3, 2026 in the English Wikipedia article Massachusetts (text under CC BY-SA 4.0), which is linked beside each question; the questions, wrong choices and explanations are in our own words. Left out on purpose: population figures and ranks, current office-holders and living people, sports teams, companies and brands, rankings of schools and crop rankings. Boston has a pack of its own on this site, so the city is asked here only where the state's story needs it. Levels are our estimate. Licence: own work
