Telephone Charades Ideas to Pass Down a Line: how it works

Telephone charades passes a silent scene down a line of players, each copying the one before, and the fun is in what arrives. Single words survive untouched, so these 175 telephone charades ideas are chains of two, three or four actions: Make a sandwich, then drop it. Pick a topic, tap Next card and show the phone to the first actor only.

How to run a line

Four to eight players line up facing away from the first actor, who reads the card, taps the next player on the shoulder and acts the chain once, in silence. That player taps the third and repeats what they saw. The last player acts it for the room and guesses, then the first actor shows the original. This version has no official rulebook, so every number here is a house rule.

Score the beats that arrive

Every Easy card has 2 beats, every Medium card 3 and every Hard card 4. In the full list, the line under each card opens with its beat count, then a hint. Under Toss a pancake, lose sight of it, then find it on your head: 3 beats. Look up for a long time before you pat your hair. Tap +1 for each beat the last player showed.

Tips

  • Play without the clock, or tap 2 min and Start round as a deadline for the whole line. Six players get twenty seconds each.
  • Each player watches once. A second look lets the chain arrive whole, and the changes are the point.
  • With ten or more players, run two lines from the same card and compare the two endings.

Questions and answers

How do you play telephone charades?

It borrows from the whispering game of telephone, where a message passes along a line, errors build up and the last player announces what arrived. Here the message is acted. Players face away until tapped, watch once and pass it on. Nobody has to win: comparing the first scene with the last is the entertainment.

Why do telephone charades ideas need more than one action?

A one-word card such as Elephant gives the line nothing to lose: the sixth elephant looks like the first. A chain has joints, and joints are where scenes change. In Take a cookie from the jar, get caught, put it back, then take two, watch whether the quiet third beat makes it to the end.

How many players do you need?

Three is the least that makes a line: one to act, one to copy, one to guess. Five or six gives the scene room to change. For a big group, give each team its own line and card. The deck keeps scores for up to four teams.

How this list was compiled: Written for this site by the editors; nothing was copied from another list. Every card is a chain of actions for telephone charades, where one player acts a scene, the next copies what they saw, and so on down a line. Beats are separated by commas. Every Easy card has 2 beats, every Medium card 3 and every Hard card 4, and the line under each card opens with that number so a host can score the beats that reach the end of the line; the build script checks all three against each other. The rest of the line is the editors' staging hint for the first actor. It is advice, not a rule. Every chain can be mimed on a clear floor without props, climbing or real falls, and the hints say so where a beat might tempt a player (a chair, stairs, sitting down hard). The deck was checked against the site's family-safe rule (nothing sexual, no alcohol or drugs, nothing that mocks a person or a group, no real people) and holds no film, show, book or song titles and no brand names. The acted version of the game has no official rules that the editors could find, so the way to play given on the page is the editors' description. The spoken game it borrows from is described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_game, checked 2026-09-19: players form a line, a message is passed from one to the next, errors build up in the retellings, the last player announces what arrived and it is compared with the original, and there is no winner. That article names no acted version. Wikipedia's article on charades, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charades, checked 2026-09-19, does not mention telephone charades either. Card texts were compared with every other deck on the site on 2026-09-19, including data/reverse-charades-ideas.json and data/funny-charades-ideas.json. Licence: own work
