How this list was compiled: Each puzzle is a saying, a proverb or a compound word spelled out in emoji, with the answer kept behind Show answer. The answers are common idioms, proverbs and everyday words, not film, show, book or song titles, and there are no real people and no brand names. A few sayings have also been borrowed as titles over the years; they are here as the sayings. Each puzzle was written by emoji name, and the names were matched to characters in the Unicode Consortium's own list, https://unicode.org/Public/emoji/13.0/emoji-test.txt, read on 2026-09-19. Every character on the page is a fully-qualified sequence from that file. The deck uses 387 different emoji; the newest belong to Emoji 12.0, whose own data file (https://unicode.org/Public/emoji/12.0/emoji-test.txt, also read on 2026-09-19) is dated January 2019, so nothing here should show as an empty box on a phone or computer from the last few years. No country flags are used: a country flag emoji is a pair of regional indicator letters, and a system may display the letters in place of the flag (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_indicator_symbol, read on 2026-09-19). Three puzzles use the checkered flag, which is a single picture and not a letter pair. The handful of emoji best known for a rude second meaning in chat slang were left out. The line after each answer explains the puzzle in our own words: the reading of each picture in order, then a note for any picture that stands for a different word. Pictures are described by what they show and not always by their official Unicode names, because the drawings differ a little from one phone maker to the next. No two puzzles use the same emoji string, no answer appears twice, and no emoji string matches a card in any other deck on the site. Some answers are also cards, as plain words, in the site's acting and drawing decks: 27 of them in the dumb charades deck, where they are acted and not decoded. Every answer and explanation was run through the site's trademark blocklist and against the family-safe rule: nothing sexual, no alcohol or drugs, nothing violent or grim, nothing that mocks a person or a group. Levels are our judgment of how fast a group gets the answer: 138 easy (mostly pictures that are the word they show), 289 medium (usually one picture standing for another word), 129 hard (a sound-alike, or a longer saying). Licence: own work
How it works
Emoji charades ideas with nobody acting: 556 sayings, proverbs and compound words spelled in emoji. One player shows the pictures and the rest guess. Press Show answer to see the phrase and how the pictures spell it.

How to play emoji charades on one screen
Share the page on a call or pass one phone around. Press Play a 1-minute round and let one team guess out loud. The answer stays hidden until someone presses Show answer, so the host can play too. Then press Next question; the end card gives +1.
Playing in a group chat
Copy a row of pictures from the list under the card and paste it into the chat. The first correct reply takes the point. That list prints each answer beside its pictures, so pick one reader per round. Every picture is from the 2019 emoji set or older. None is a country flag, which some screens show as two letters.
Start a new group on Easy in Two pictures, one word: rain and a bow make Rainbow.
In Puns and sound-alikes, say the pictures aloud: car and dog make Carpet, because the dog is a pet.
Whole proverbs run to seven pictures. Score only the full saying.
Questions and answers
What is emoji charades?
A guessing game with pictures in place of acting. One player shows a row of emoji, such as a bee and a hat, and the others work out the phrase: A bee in your bonnet. It suits video calls and group chats.
Are there film or song titles in the deck?
No. Every answer is an idiom, a proverb or an everyday compound word, such as Once in a blue moon or Houseboat. For a titles round, have each team turn five titles into emoji and send them to the other side.
What is the line under the answer?
It shows how the pictures spell the phrase: each picture's word in order, then a note for any picture that stands for a different word. For a shooting star and a bone it reads: Wish + bone. You wish on a shooting star.
