Questions and answers

What is a good trivia question about hedgehogs?

Try this one: what covers the quills of a newborn hedgehog? A protective membrane. Over several hours it dries and shrinks, then falls away, and the quills come through.

Do hedgehogs shoot their quills?

No. A hedgehog's spines are neither barbed nor poisonous, and they do not come away easily, as a porcupine's quills do. A threatened hedgehog rolls into a tight spiny ball instead.

What do hedgehogs eat?

A bit of everything: hedgehogs are omnivores. Insects, snails, frogs, toads, snakes, bird eggs and carrion are on the menu, along with mushrooms, grass roots, berries and melons. The European hedgehog lives largely on earthworms.

How were the answers checked?

Each was read on October 3, 2026 in the English Wikipedia articles Hedgehog, European hedgehog or Four-toed hedgehog; every question links its own. Population figures, diseases, pet keeping, and hedgehogs as food or medicine are left out.

How this list was compiled: Written for this site; nothing was copied from another list. Questions and wrong choices are our own. Each explanation restates, in our own sentences, a fact from the English Wikipedia article named and linked beside the question (https://en.wikipedia.org, text under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license): Hedgehog, European hedgehog and Four-toed hedgehog. On October 3, 2026 the passage that states each fact was read in its article before the question was kept. Left out on purpose: population estimates and survey figures, conservation listings and laws, the diseases sections, hedgehogs as food or medicine, pet keeping and its rules, eradication counts, road casualty figures and mating. Levels are our estimate: easy is fair for any table, medium suits people who know the animal, hard will stump most tables. Unofficial, and not advice on keeping, feeding or approaching an animal.
