What does the word Adirondack mean?

It is thought to come from a Mohawk word meaning eaters of trees. The earliest written use is from 1635, and the state geologist Ebenezer Emmons gave the mountains the name in 1838.

How many Adirondack High Peaks are there?

Forty-six are on the traditional list, drawn up for peaks of at least 4,000 feet. Later surveys found four of them slightly lower, and none has been taken off. People who climb them all are called Forty-Sixers.

Is Adirondack Park a national park?

No. It is a New York State park, established in 1892. About half the land inside its boundary is privately owned, and the state's share is the Forest Preserve.
