Halloween Trivia Questions for Kids, Turnip Lanterns to Candy Corn: how it works

Start with the question on the card: read it out, tap the answer the children shout, then press Check answer for the right one and a sentence on why. These 80 Halloween trivia questions for kids are about real pumpkins, bats, spiders and owls, and about where trick-or-treating came from. Nothing in them is scary.

Six topics, none of them scary

Press Topic to stay with one of the six. The animals are asked about as real animals, so a child learns that a bat's wing is skin stretched over its finger bones and that a black cat means good luck in Britain and Japan. No ghosts, monsters or graveyards appear anywhere in the pack.

A class party, a scored round or a printed sheet

At a class party stay in Practice mode: the answer and its reason appear when you press Check answer, and misses wait under Missed. For a scored round press Exam mode, then Start the exam: 20 questions, scored topic by topic. For children waiting for dusk, Print question sheet gives 20 questions with lettered choices and a name and score line, and Print answer key repeats each reason.

Tips

  • Untick Shuffle questions and choices and each topic runs from easiest to hardest. Pumpkins then open on what a carved pumpkin with a light inside is called.
  • With five-year-olds in the room, start on pumpkins or harvest customs. The history topic holds the most hard questions.
  • Draw a paper pumpkin for each team and color in one segment per right answer, so nobody needs candy to keep score.

Questions and answers

What do the Halloween questions cover?

Six topics: pumpkins and jack-o'-lanterns (11 questions), bats (11), spiders and webs (14), owls, cats and crows (15), Halloween history and trick-or-treating (15) and harvest customs (14). Some are quick, such as which three colors make up candy corn. Others stretch an older child, such as the country where the words trick or treat were first recorded.

Are any of the questions scary?

No. Bats, spiders, owls and black cats appear as real animals: what they eat, how they fly, how a web is built. The history topic covers turnip lanterns, guising, soul cakes and apple bobbing, and its one Day of the Dead question is about marigolds and remembering family. Nothing mentions ghosts, monsters or blood.

How were the answers checked?

Each fact was checked in September 2026 against the Wikipedia article linked under its answer, by reading the sentence that states it. Facts that change were left out, such as the record weight of a giant pumpkin and the number of bat species. A few questions were dropped because the article did not state the fact plainly.

How this list was compiled: Written for this site by the editors; nothing was copied from another list. Every question, wrong choice and explanation is our own wording. The pack is meant for children, so nothing in it is frightening: it asks about pumpkins, bats, spiders, owls, cats and crows as real plants and animals, about where Halloween customs come from, and about the autumn harvest. There are no ghosts, monsters, graveyards, blood or horror stories. Each fact was checked on 2026-09-19 against the English Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org) named and linked beside the question: the article text was fetched on 2026-09-18 or 2026-09-19, and the sentence that states the fact was read before the question was kept. Every extra claim in an explanation was checked the same way. Questions were dropped or changed when the article did not state the fact plainly: what the Greek word behind pumpkin means, what a baby owl is called, what a scarecrow is stuffed with, where barn owls nest, whether a raven is bigger than a crow (the question now asks for the largest bird in the crow family, as the Common raven article states), and the claim that an apple floats because part of it is air (the article says apples are less dense than water). Left out on purpose because they change: the record weight of a giant pumpkin, which state cans the most pumpkins, the number of bat species, and the size of the largest bat colony. Also left out: living people, and film, TV, brand and league names. Questions that repeated a fact already asked in the site's kids, first grade, third grade or science packs were cut. Levels are an editor's judgment for children of about 6 to 11: easy suits the youngest, medium is for most of the group, hard is a stretch. Licence: own work
