Would You Rather Questions Kindergarten Kids Can Answer: how it works
These are would you rather questions kindergarten children can answer without reading a word. An adult reads the card aloud, and each choice is five words or fewer: Be a cat or Be a dog, Jump or Spin. Tap a side for every hand in the air and the card keeps count.
Say it twice, then count hands
Say both choices twice, because a five-year-old tends to pick the last thing heard. Hold up your left hand for the first choice and your right for the second, then tap once per raised hand. Next question deals again and Skip puts a card back. At circle time, skip the hands: children stand on the left or right side of the rug and you count heads.

Eight topic chips follow the kindergarten year, from Animals and Food to Colors and shapes and Count and compare. Every Move your body card can be acted out on the spot, so have the class show you both moves before anyone chooses. Sight words only marks 25 cards built from Dolch pre-primer, primer and noun words. Preschool picks marks 32 preschool would you rather questions with choices of three words or fewer.
Tips
Count and compare starts math talk. After Have a cookie now or Have two cookies later, ask which side has more hands, and how many more.
Ask one child from each side to say why, in a whole sentence that starts with I would rather. The vote is the hook; the sentence is the speaking practice.
Stay on Easy in the first weeks of school. Hard holds 10 cards that ask a child to give something up, such as Skip recess today or Skip snack today.
Questions and answers
What ages are these questions for?
Ages four to six, with an adult reading aloud. Every choice names something a child can picture: an animal, a food, a color, a way to move. Nothing is scary, no card asks for a name and there is nothing to type. For ages six to ten, the kids deck has longer questions.
Can children read the cards themselves?
Some can. Press Sight words only for 25 cards where every word of both choices is on the Dolch pre-primer, primer or noun list, such as Play in the snow or Play in the rain. The words Would you rather above the choices are harder, so read that part for them.
Can I print the questions?
Yes. All 117 are printed under the deck by topic, so your browser's Print puts the list on paper or saves a PDF. Cut it into strips for a question jar, or send one topic home as dinner-table talk.
