How it works
In this guess the code game a lock has three or four different digits. Each clue is a guess, and it says how many of its digits are right and whether they are in place. One code fits every clue.

How to read a clue
314: one right, in place means the code shares exactly one digit with 314, in the same position. Out of place means the digit is in the code, but somewhere else. None right rules out every digit of that guess. The puzzles come in three sets: three clues, five clues and four-digit codes.
The pencil game for two
1. Each player writes down a secret code of four different digits. 2. Take turns guessing the other player's code. 3. After each guess, the other player says how many digits are right and in place, and how many are right but out of place. 4. The first to name the other's code wins. It is the old game of bulls and cows.
Questions and answers
How do you solve a guess the code puzzle?
Where a clue says none right, begin there and cross out its digits in every other clue. Then test what is left against the clues about place. One code fits them all.
Does every puzzle have exactly one answer?
Yes. Each puzzle was checked against every possible code, and exactly one fits. Every clue is needed: take one away and more than one code fits.
Where is the reasoning for each code?
Tap a code and the card shows the right one, then goes through the clues one by one: which digits each clue shares with the code, and whether they are in place.
