How this list was compiled: Own work: 60 picture puzzles written for this site on 13 October 2026, 15 in each of four rounds; nothing was copied from another quiz or list. Every answer is a traditional tale under its traditional title: tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, tales by Hans Christian Andersen, French tales (Charles Perrault, Madame d'Aulnoy, Villeneuve and Beaumont) with English-language nursery tales, and tales from the Middle East, Norway, Russia, Germany and Japan. No film or studio version is an answer. The plot details each row shows, and the line under each answer, were read on 13 October 2026 in the English Wikipedia article named on the puzzle (text under CC BY-SA 4.0) and are told in our own words; where versions of a tale differ, the row follows the version that article summarizes. The three other choices of each puzzle are real tales named in those articles or in the English Wikipedia article Grimms' Fairy Tales. A picture stands for a thing with no emoji of its own: a horse for the donkey, thread for the spindle, a chestnut for the acorn, a green circle for the pea, the pine decoration for bamboo, a red coat for the hooded cape. Every emoji is a fully-qualified emoji of Emoji 12.0, checked against the Unicode Consortium's list (https://unicode.org/Public/emoji/12.0/emoji-test.txt), read on 13 October 2026. No row repeats a row of the site's other emoji quizzes. Levels are our own estimate. Licence: own work
How it works
This fairy tale emoji quiz tells 60 tales in rows of emoji: fifteen each from the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, French and English nursery tales and tales from around the world. Pick from four titles, or print a round.
Read the full guide
What the four rounds hold
Round 1 is the Grimms, from Snow White to King Thrushbeard. Round 2 is Andersen, from The Little Mermaid to The Galoshes of Fortune. Round 3 has Cinderella, Puss in Boots and the English nursery tales, such as The Three Little Pigs. Round 4 travels: Aladdin, MomotarΕ of Japan, the Russian Snow Maiden.
Play it in a classroom or a library
Read a row aloud as a riddle: a frog, a golden ball, a prince. Children name the tale before the four titles are shown. For a paper game, the sheet starts with 20 rows and takes more, and its answer key prints with it when ticked.
Some things have no emoji. A horse stands for the donkey of Bremen, and a green circle for the pea.
Questions and answers
Does the fairy tale emoji quiz come with answers?
Yes. Picking a title shows the right one and a line on how the emoji tell the story. All 60 rows are listed with their answers lower on the page, each with the Wikipedia article its plot was checked against.
Is the fairy tale emoji quiz easy enough for children?
For children who know the stories, yes. Start with Round 3, where Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood are. Each round has five easy rows, six medium and four hard, and the hard ones are lesser-known tales such as The Hare and the Hedgehog.
Why does a row not match the story I know?
Old tales come in many versions, and no film version is an answer. Each row follows the version summarized in the article named beside its answer: the Grimms' frog fetches a golden ball from a well, and Perrault's Sleeping Beauty sleeps a hundred years.
