Drawing Game Words for Kids Ages 5 to 10: how it works

These drawing game words for kids are things a child of five to ten already knows: Dog, Ice pop, Rain boots, Pillow fort. All 386 are safe to read aloud, with nothing scary and no brand names, and they suit Pictionary-style games at home or in class. Press Next card and hand over the pencil.

Set up a round for small hands

A grown-up holds the phone, since the youngest may not read yet. Whisper the word to the drawer, then press Start round. Rounds start at 90 seconds here, because a six-year-old draws slowly. Tap Easy for ages five to seven: 148 cards of one object each, such as Mug and Party hat. Medium holds 238 actions and small scenes for ages eight to ten, such as Leapfrog.

Words a new reader can read alone

First reading words deals 74 cards, such as Bird, Cake and Squirrel, that are also nouns on the Dolch sight-word list, first published in 1936 and still handed out in schools to memorize. A new reader may know the card on sight. The printed list gives all the easy drawing game words for kids a way to start from simple shapes: for Penguin, an oval standing upright with a white belly, flippers and flat feet.

Tips

  • Keep the standard rule of no letters and no numbers, even with new writers. Birthday becomes a cake with candles, not a spelling test.
  • With mixed ages, tap Easy before a small child's turn and Medium before an adult's.
  • Under seven, skip the scores and just press Next card. Older kids can play as one team and try to beat their last total.

Questions and answers

What ages are these drawing game words for?

Five to ten. A five-year-old can draw most Easy cards, single objects such as Apple, Tire and Shoe. Medium cards ask for an action or a small scene, such as Tying a shoe or Sleepover. When the deck gets too easy, the big drawing word deck adds a Hard level.

Are these the kids' cards from Pictionary?

No. The boxed game and its cards belong to its publisher. This is an independent deck of 386 original words, not the official game and not affiliated with its makers. The basic rules are the same: one player draws without talking, and the team guesses before the timer runs out.

What if my child does not know how to draw the word?

Read them the way in from the list below: for Hamster, a round body with full cheeks, running inside a wheel. If that fails, press Skip, which puts the word back and deals another. With No repeats tonight ticked, a played word stays out until you press Start over.

How this list was compiled: Written by the Game Night Generator editors for this page on 2026-09-18: 386 words a child of five to ten can draw, each with one way to draw it built from simple shapes. The drawing lines are suggestions in our own words, not rules, and none of them uses a letter or a number, because the game bans both. Levels are set by a rule: an Easy card is one object, and a Medium card is an action or a small scene. The 74 cards in the First reading words group are nouns that also appear in the Nouns section of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolch_word_list (the Dolch sight-word list, first published in 1936), checked 2026-09-19. Dolch nouns that cannot be drawn, such as thing, way and name, were left out. The game rules named on the page (no letters or numbers, no spoken clues, no pointing at objects, a one-minute timer) follow https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pictionary, checked 2026-09-19. Every card was screened for a page that children use: nothing scary, nothing unkind, no real people, and no brand, film, show or character names. Licence: own work
