  • Would you rather call down fire on Mount Carmel or hear the still small voice on Horeb? 1 Kings 18:36-38 and 19:11-12. Fire falls on Elijah's soaked altar; later God is not in the wind, the earthquake or the fire, but in a still small voice.
  • Would you rather dip seven times in the Jordan or wash off mud in the pool of Siloam? 2 Kings 5:10-14 and John 9:6-7. Naaman says the rivers of Damascus are better and nearly refuses the Jordan; a man who has never seen washes and comes back seeing.

The Gospels 14

  • Would you rather ask for proof like Thomas or believe the friends who already saw? John 20:24-29. Thomas misses the first visit and waits eight days; Jesus blesses those who have not seen and have believed.
  • Would you rather be the boy who gave his lunch or be the widow who gave two coins? John 6:9 and Mark 12:41-44. A boy's lunch feeds a crowd; Jesus says the widow's two small coins are more than all the large gifts.
  • Would you rather climb the mount of transfiguration or sit in the house at Pentecost? Matthew 17:1-3 and Acts 2:1-4. Peter, James and John see Moses and Elijah appear; at Pentecost a sound like rushing wind fills the house.
  • Would you rather dig through a roof for a friend or climb a sycamore tree like Zacchaeus? Mark 2:3-5 and Luke 19:2-6. Four friends lower a man through the roof; Zacchaeus, a short tax collector, climbs up to see over the crowd.

  • Would you rather shout over the crowd like Bartimaeus or reach through it for his cloak? Mark 10:46-48 and 5:25-28. Bartimaeus is told to be quiet and shouts louder; a woman who has been ill for twelve years touches his clothes.
  • Would you rather sit and listen like Mary or get dinner on the table like Martha? Luke 10:38-42. Martha is distracted with much serving and asks for help; Jesus says Mary has chosen the good part.
  • Would you rather step out of the boat with Peter or stay in the boat and keep rowing? Matthew 14:24-31. The boat is far from land in a headwind when Peter walks on the water, looks at the wind and starts to sink.
  • Would you rather wave palm branches on the road or lend the young donkey for the ride? John 12:12-13 and Luke 19:30-35. The crowd takes palm branches and shouts Hosanna; the owners let the colt go when told the Lord needs it.

Parables and teachings 12

  • Would you rather be the mustard seed that grows tall or be the yeast that lifts the dough? Matthew 13:31-33. The smallest seed grows until birds lodge in its branches; a little yeast works through three measures of meal.
  • Would you rather be the runaway son, welcomed home or be the older brother who never left? Luke 15:20-32. The father runs to meet the younger son, and the older one stays outside, angry about the fattened calf.
  • Would you rather be the salt of the earth or be a lamp on a stand? Matthew 5:13-16. Salt that loses its flavor is thrown out, and nobody lights a lamp to put it under a measuring basket.
  • Would you rather be trusted with five talents or be trusted with one talent? Matthew 25:14-18. One servant gets five talents, one two and one a single talent, each according to his own ability.
  • Would you rather build slowly on rock or build quickly on sand near the water? Matthew 7:24-27. Both houses get the same rain, floods and wind, and only the one on the rock is standing afterward.
  • Would you rather dig up treasure hidden in a field or find the one pearl worth everything? Matthew 13:44-46. The finder of the treasure and the pearl merchant each sell all they have to buy it.
  • Would you rather knock at midnight to borrow bread or get out of bed to lend it? Luke 11:5-8. The friend inside says the door is shut and the children are in bed, and gets up anyway because of the persistence.
  • Would you rather search the hills for one lost sheep or sweep the house for one lost coin? Luke 15:4-9. The shepherd leaves ninety-nine to find one; the woman lights a lamp and sweeps for one coin out of ten.
  • Would you rather sit low and be moved up or sit high and be moved down? Luke 14:8-10. At a wedding feast, Jesus says, sit in the lowest place so the host can say, Friend, move up higher.
  • Would you rather stop on the road like the Samaritan or nurse the man at the inn for days? Luke 10:33-35. The Samaritan bandages the man, pays the host two denarii and promises to cover anything extra on his way back.
  • Would you rather thread a camel through a needle's eye or pull a beam out of your own eye? Matthew 19:24 and 7:3-5. Both are Jesus' own exaggerations: the camel is about riches, and the beam is about judging a speck in someone else.
  • Would you rather work all day for one denarius or work an hour for it and hear grumbling? Matthew 20:1-12. The owner hires workers five times in one day and pays every one of them the same denarius.

Acts and the letters 12

  • Would you rather be an eye or be a foot in the body of the church? 1 Corinthians 12:14-21. Paul's picture of the church: the eye cannot tell the hand, or the head the feet, I have no need for you.
  • Would you rather be Rhoda, too happy to open the gate or be Peter, still knocking outside? Acts 12:13-16. Rhoda knows Peter's voice, runs in to tell everyone and leaves him standing at the door.
  • Would you rather be young Timothy leading a church or be old Paul writing from prison? 1 Timothy 4:12 and Philemon 1:9. Timothy is told to let no one despise his youth; Paul calls himself the aged, and a prisoner.
  • Would you rather carry the shield of faith or carry the sword of the Spirit? Ephesians 6:13-17. The armor of God has six pieces: belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet and sword.
  • Would you rather grow in patience or grow in self-control? Galatians 5:22-23. The list of the fruit of the Spirit has nine parts: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control.
  • Would you rather hear Paul preach until midnight or hear Ezra read from dawn to noon? Acts 20:7-9 and Nehemiah 8:3. A young man named Eutychus nods off in the window during Paul's talk; Ezra reads from early morning to midday.
  • Would you rather ride out Paul's two-week storm at sea or swim to the beach on Malta? Acts 27:27-44. After fourteen nights adrift the ship runs aground at daybreak, and all 276 on board reach land by swimming or on planks.
  • Would you rather see the street of pure gold or see the twelve gates, each a single pearl? Revelation 21:21. John's vision of the new Jerusalem has twelve gates, each made of one pearl, and a street of gold like clear glass.

  • Would you rather be a poor but wise youth or be an old king who stopped listening? Ecclesiastes 4:13. Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knows how to take advice.
  • Would you rather be little known with plenty to eat or look important and go hungry? Proverbs 12:9. Better is he who is little known and has a servant than he who honors himself and lacks bread.
  • Would you rather be slow to anger or be strong enough to take a city? Proverbs 16:32. One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and one who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
  • Would you rather eat a dry crust in a quiet house or feast in a house full of arguing? Proverbs 17:1 picks the quiet: better is a dry morsel with quietness than a house full of feasting with strife.
  • Would you rather eat vegetables at a loving table or eat a feast at a bitter table? Proverbs 15:17 answers this one: better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened calf with hatred.
  • Would you rather have a good name or have great riches? Proverbs 22:1 takes a side: a good name is more desirable than great riches, and loving favor is better than silver and gold.
  • Would you rather have a good neighbor next door or have a brother who lives far away? Proverbs 27:10. On the day of trouble, the proverb says, a neighbor who is near is better than a distant brother.
  • Would you rather have a little and earn it fairly or have a fortune and earn it unfairly? Proverbs 16:8. Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues with injustice.
  • Would you rather have one handful and some quiet or have two handfuls and no rest? Ecclesiastes 4:6. Better is a handful with quietness than two handfuls with labor and chasing after wind.
  • Would you rather hear a hard truth from a friend or hear a kind word that is not true? Proverbs 27:5-6. Better is open rebuke than hidden love, and the wounds of a friend are faithful.
  • Would you rather keep the temple door for one day or spend a thousand days anywhere else? Psalm 84:10 is a would you rather already answered: a day in your courts is better than a thousand, and the singer would rather be a doorkeeper.
  • Would you rather know the Psalms by heart or own thousands of gold and silver coins? Psalm 119:72. The longest psalm says the law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver.
  • Would you rather lie down in green pastures or walk beside still waters? Psalm 23:2. The shepherd psalm gives both in one verse: he makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters.
  • Would you rather study the ant, who works ahead or study the lilies, who do not worry? Proverbs 6:6-8 and Matthew 6:28-29. Proverbs sends the lazy to watch the ant store food in summer; Jesus points to lilies that neither toil nor spin.
  • Would you rather work alone and keep all the credit or work as a pair and split it? Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. Two are better than one, because if one falls the other lifts him up, and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Eight topics, from Genesis to Proverbs

Eight topics cover the Bible from Genesis to Acts and the letters. Psalms and Proverbs holds 15 cards, most of them sayings the Bible itself sets out as a choice: Proverbs 17:1 gives Eat a dry crust in a quiet house or feast in a house full of arguing.

Sunday school and Youth group

Sunday school marks 23 cards on the best-known stories, 21 of them easy, such as Face Goliath with five stones or try to walk in King Saul's armor. Youth group marks 40 where both sides cost something. The card shows no reference, so after the vote ask the smaller side why, then read the passage from the list together.
