Best Icebreaker Questions: 200 Anyone Can Answer in Ten Seconds: how it works

The best icebreaker questions share one trait: anyone can answer in ten seconds without giving anything away. This deck holds 200 of them in eight groups, with 40 multiple-choice cards to run as a show of hands and 34 about food. Read the card out, then press Next card.

Run it from one phone

Read the card out and answer it first. Go round the circle, or down the names on a video call, then press Next card. In a big room, tap the Multiple choice pill and ask for hands on each option, so nobody speaks alone. Let people pass: an icebreaker works when it is relaxed and has no wrong answer. Two or three cards is plenty before a meeting or class.

What is in the deck

The eight groups sort cards by how the room answers. One-word answers and Right now are the quickest. Food icebreaker questions are the safest with people who have just met, since everyone eats. Friendly debates split a room over whether cereal is a soup, or which finger you start counting on. Firsts and lasts, Quick what-ifs and One-sentence stories take a sentence each, so they are marked Medium. Nothing repeats until you press Start over, and the full list is printed below.

Tips

  • Over twelve people, stay on Multiple choice and count hands. Under eight, a One-sentence stories card gives everyone a turn.
  • Using this as an icebreaker question generator each week? The page always opens on the same card, so press Next card once before sharing your screen.
  • Keep your own answer to one line. The room copies the length of the first answer it hears.

Questions and answers

What makes the best icebreaker questions work?

Three things: anyone can answer without preparing, the answer gives away nothing private, and no answer is wrong. "Which fruit is overrated?" passes all three. "What is your biggest fear?" fails the second. The icebreakers people dislike are usually pointless or a poor fit for the room.

How do multiple choice icebreaker questions work with a big group?

Tap the Multiple choice pill to deal only those 40 cards. Read the options and ask for a show of hands on each, or have people type a pick in the chat. Everyone answers at once, so fifty people take no longer than five. The deck does not count votes, so tally by eye.

Are these icebreaker questions safe for work and for kids?

Yes. Every card was written for a mixed room: nothing sexual, no drinking, and nothing about bodies, money, relationships, faith, health or where someone is from. A few mention an inbox or an airport, which younger kids may shrug at, so press Skip on those.

Every question was screened line by line against the site's clean-deck rules (nothing sexual, no alcohol or drugs, no self-harm, no bullying, nothing about bodies, money or relationships, nothing aimed at a protected group) and against the ten-second rule: any player can answer without preparing and without sharing personal information. Multiple-choice cards carry their options in x.options as well as in the card text. The deck was compared with data/icebreaker-generator.json on 2026-09-18 and shares no question with it. The definition of an icebreaker and the advice that one should be relaxing, non-threatening, free of right or wrong answers and should not require personal information were checked on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icebreaker_(facilitation) on 2026-09-18.
