Valentine's Day Icebreaker Questions About Friends and Kindness: how it works

These Valentine's Day icebreaker questions are about friends, kindness, cards and candy. None of the 60 cards mentions romance or anyone's love life, so a teacher or a team lead can read any of them out on February 14 without checking first. Take a few answers, then press Next card.

Why the deck skips romance

A room of coworkers or fourth graders is not a room of couples, and a question about love lives puts somebody on the spot. Some countries already agree. In Finland February 14 is ystävänpäivä, Friend's Day, more about remembering friends than partners. In most of Latin America it is Día del Amor y la Amistad, Love and Friendship Day. One card asks what the room would write in a Friend's Day card.

What each group asks

Each group has a topic pill. Multiple choice gives four or five options to settle by show of hands, which suits a big class or a video call. Friends and Kindness ask for a sentence. Hearts, cards and candy is the lightest: "Milk, dark or white chocolate?" takes two seconds. Appreciation points the thanks at objects, places and the whole group, never at one person in the room.

Tips

  • Handing out valentines in class? Deal one card while the bags go round: "Which is harder to cut from paper: a heart or a star?"
  • At work, open with Appreciation. "Which job at this school or office deserves more thank-yous?" thanks someone who is not in the meeting.
  • Let anyone pass without a reason. If the card itself misses, press Skip: it goes back in the deck and may come round later.

Questions and answers

Are these Valentine's Day icebreaker questions safe for a classroom?

Yes. No card is about romance, and none asks a child to name a favorite person in the room, so nobody is left out of an answer. School children in the United States exchange valentine cards, and once those are counted teachers receive the most valentines.

How do I use them at the office without it getting awkward?

Keep it to a few cards at the start of a meeting and stay in Multiple choice or Appreciation. "What makes a good teammate: shows up, listens, shares credit or brings snacks?" is about work. Do not follow up with plans for the evening: the deck never asks, and the host should not either.

What if someone in the group dislikes Valentine's Day?

The deck allows for it. "Candy hearts: tasty or chalky?" welcomes a complaint, and several cards are arguments about chocolate. If the day is a hard one for someone, tap Kindness, where no card mentions the day at all.

Every question is about friendship, kindness, candy, cards or appreciation: none mentions dating, crushes, partners, secret admirers or anyone's love life, and none asks a player to name a favorite person in the room. Each was screened line by line against the site's clean-deck rules (nothing sexual, no alcohol or drugs, no self-harm, no bullying, nothing about bodies, money or relationships, nothing aimed at a protected group) and against the ten-second rule: anyone can answer without preparing and without sharing personal information. Multiple-choice cards carry their options in x.options as well as in the card text.
