Deal one game, or one of each type

Press Pick another game for a new card. Then choose K to 2, 3 to 5 or 6 to 8 in the Any grade box, and only games for that band are dealt. One of each type deals a warm-up, a listening game, a build and a moving game. The full list of team building games for students sits under the page text, sorted by type.

Team building games for elementary students, without touch

Nobody is lifted, carried or held, and no game asks for held hands or a blindfold. That is this site's own rule, not an expert review. An adult runs and watches every game.

Tips
  • The Group line gives the team size, so a class of 30 runs most builds as several teams at once.
  • The Debrief line is one question to ask the class after the game.

  • Class Total Jumps Goal: the class beats its own total number of jumps. 1. In pairs, one child jumps on the spot for 30 seconds while the partner counts. 2. Swap, then add the two numbers. 3. Each pair calls out its sum, and a scribe adds the class total on the board. 4. Rest for a minute and go again, trying to beat the total. Any child may do small hops or step-ups. Grades: 3 to 5 and 6 to 8. Group: 8 to 35, in pairs. Time: 10 min. Needs: nothing to bring (a clock and the board). Debrief: What did your partner do that helped you keep going?

Move back to desks and try again, and write the best time on the board. Grades: 3 to 5 and 6 to 8. Group: 10 to 35. Time: 10 min. Needs: nothing to bring (the room's chairs and a clock). Debrief: Which part of our plan saved the most time?
  • Exactly Five Standing Goal: exactly the number of children the leader names are standing, with no talking and no pointing. 1. Everyone sits. The leader says a number, such as five. 2. Children stand or sit as they choose until exactly that many are standing. 3. Hold it for a slow count of three, then the leader names a new number. 4. For older classes, add a rule: nobody may stand for more than two numbers in a row. Grades: K to 2, 3 to 5 and 6 to 8. Group: 8 to 35. Time: 5 min. Needs: nothing. The leader names a way to sort, such as favorite season or the number of letters in your first name. 2. Children show their answer with fingers or a mime and walk to find others who match. 3. When the groups settle, each group says its answer together. 4. A child who is alone in a group chooses the next way to sort. Grades: K to 2 and 3 to 5. Group: 8 to 35. Time: 10 min. Needs: nothing. Four children stand on it and should cover less than half. 2. Without stepping off, the team turns the sheet over so the underside faces up. 3. A foot on the ground means smooth the sheet flat and begin again. 4. Children keep their own space and nobody is lifted. If the four cannot stand apart, use a larger sheet. Grades: 3 to 5 and 6 to 8. Give each team of five six flat rubber spot markers, which are the stones. 2. Feet may only touch stones. A team with a foot in the water goes back to its bank. 3. A stone with no foot or hand on it floats away: the leader takes it. 4. One child stands on each stone. The team passes the spare stone forward, steps along and picks up the last one. Steps only, no jumps and no carrying. Grades: 3 to 5 and 6 to 8. Group: 5 to 35, in teams of five. Time: 15 min. Needs: six flat rubber spot markers for each team, on a floor that is not slippery. Draw two chalk lines that start one foot apart and spread to four feet apart. That is the creek. 2. Children line up, pick any place along the creek and jump or step across, one at a time. 3. Each crossing scores one for the class, and the class counts aloud. 4. In round two, children are invited to try a place a little wider than their last one. Grades: K to 2. Group: 6 to 30. Time: 10 min. Needs: chalk on a playground or tape on a gym floor. Debrief: How did you choose your place to cross?

Everyone holds the edge of the play parachute with two hands. On "one, two, three, up", lift it overhead. 2. While it is up, the leader calls a group, such as "birthdays in summer". 3. Those children let go, walk under to an empty place on the far side and take hold again. 4. Count how many swaps the class can make before the parachute touches a head. Grades: K to 2 and 3 to 5. Group: 10 to 30. Time: 10 min. Needs: one play parachute or a large light sheet. Debrief: What did the children holding the edge do to help the ones walking under?
  • Pass-It-Along Beanbag Brigade Goal: the class moves 20 beanbags from the pile to the bin, with every child touching every bag. 1. Stand in one line from the pile to the bin, an arm's length apart. 2. Pass the beanbags hand to hand down the line, one after another, while the leader times it. 3. A dropped bag goes back to the pile. 4. Second round: left hands only. Third round: the class chooses its own rule. Grades: K to 2 and 3 to 5. Group: 8 to 35. Time: 10 min. Needs: 20 beanbags, a bin and a timer. Debrief: What did you watch for so that you were ready for the next bag?
  • Pond Clean-Up in Pairs Goal: the class clears every paper ball from the pond into the bin without a hand touching one. 1. Mark a pond on the floor with tape and scatter 30 crumpled paper balls in it. 2. Each pair has two rulers, one each. Together they lift one ball between the rulers and carry it to the bin. 3. A dropped ball stays where it lands until a pair picks it up again. 4. Time the clean-up, then scatter the balls and try to beat it. Grades: K to 2 and 3 to 5. Group: 6 to 30, in pairs. Time: 10 min. Needs: one ruler for each child, 30 paper balls, tape and a bin. Debrief: What did you and your partner say to each other while you carried?
  • Rope Rescue From the Island Goal: the team brings the soft toy out of the circle using two ropes, with nobody stepping inside. 1. Tape a circle three paces across and set a soft toy in a small bucket in the middle. 2. Give the team of four to six two jump ropes. Ropes are held in hands and never go around a person. 3. From outside the circle, the team must slide or lift the bucket out. 4. If the toy tips out or a foot crosses the tape, the leader resets the bucket. Grades: 3 to 5 and 6 to 8. Group: 4 to 30, in teams of four to six. Time: 15 min. Needs: two jump ropes, a small bucket, a soft toy and tape for each team. Debrief: How did the two ropes have to work together?
  • Rope Snake Through the Cones Goal: the class walks its rope through the cones without the rope touching one and without anyone letting go. 1. Everyone holds one long rope with one hand, spaced out along it, with the leader at the front. 2. Walk the rope in and out of a line of six cones. 3. If the rope touches a cone or a hand comes off, the snake goes back to the start. 4. A child takes over as the head, and the cones are moved closer together. Grades: K to 2 and 3 to 5. Group: 8 to 30. Time: 10 min. Needs: one long rope and six cones. Debrief: What did the children in the middle need to hear from the front?

How this list was compiled: Written by the Game Night Generator editors in October 2026 for the adult who runs the group: a classroom teacher, a physical education teacher, a camp or club leader, with children from kindergarten to grade 8. Every game here is cooperative: the group reaches the goal together or tries again, and nobody is out. Every name, goal, description and debrief question is our own wording of a traditional cooperative game or classroom routine that teachers commonly run; house versions vary, so treat each entry as one way to run it and not as the official one. Grade bands (K to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 8), group sizes and minutes are the editors' planning suggestions, not measurements or a curriculum standard. The list leaves out anything where a child is lifted, carried, caught or held, held-hands circles and knots, hoops passed around a hand-holding ring, crowding onto a shrinking space, blindfolds, balloons, food and any contest with a loser who sits out; the blanket flip is run only on a sheet large enough that children keep their own space, on grass or carpet, and the river crossing uses flat rubber spot markers on a floor that is not slippery, with steps and no jumps. That screen is this site's own rule and not a claim of expert, medical or educational review, so the adult in charge still decides what suits the children and the room, and an adult runs and watches every game. Checked on 2026-10-01 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangram: a tangram is a dissection puzzle of seven flat pieces (two large, one medium and two small right triangles, a square and a parallelogram), the seven fit together as a square, and the aim is to copy a given outline using all seven without overlap. The answer on the Clue Card Mystery Number card was checked by the build script: 42 is the only number that is less than 50, greater than 20 and not a multiple of 4 and has two different digits that add up to 6, and with any one of the five clues left out a second number fits. Games with no article to check against, such as the cup stack and the river crossing, are described as teachers commonly run them, with no rule presented as official. Licence: own work
