Hangman Words Hard to Guess, Each Scored by Misses: how it works

Hangman words hard enough to beat a careful guesser are short and ordinary: Tax, Jet, Job, Fox. This hard hangman words list holds 150. A computer guesser that knows a dictionary played each one, and every card prints its misses. Jazz cost it 16. Press New word and draw the blanks.

Why Fight costs 11 misses and Night costs 4

The guesser calls the letter found in the most words that still fit. Once the board reads _IGHT it calls N, so Night is done after 4 misses. Fight waits while N, S, R, D, L, M and W all miss. Difficult hangman words pair a crowded pattern with one rare letter. Look-alike endings holds 19, such as Batch (13 misses, against 5 for Catch), and Doubled letters adds 25, such as Jazzy and Nozzle.

Short beats strange

The 45 three-letter words cost 12.5 misses on average, the 15 words of seven letters or more 8.3. The famous tricky hangman words did worse than their reputation: Rhythm, Nymph, Myth, Crypt and Syzygy cost 5 misses each, the only words here that did not score hard. Jon McLoone's 2010 Wolfram study of 15 million games agrees. Jazz won at every game size, and Cat beat his guesser in half of the 10-miss games.

Tips

  • For really hard hangman words, tap 10 misses or more: 107 of the 150, topped by Tax, Jet, Job, Jazz, Fox and Koi at 16.
  • For hard hangman words animals are a safe topic: Hard animals has 28, half of them three letters long.
  • Agree on misses first. With 6 allowed, 145 of these words beat the computer; with 10, 107 still do.

Questions and answers

Are there impossible hangman words?

Not if the guesser gets enough misses: the worst words here cost 16, and the alphabet runs out at 26. What feels impossible is a rare letter in a common pattern. J, Q, X and Z make up just over 1% of the letters in dictionary words. With TA_ showing, X was the last letter our guesser tried.

Are long words harder in hangman?

No. Each letter found in a long word rules out thousands of others. In the Wolfram study, Difficult cost 3.3 wrong guesses on average. The 14 words under Long and still hard are exceptions: Buzzing cost 11 misses and Buffing 10, a doubled rare letter inside the crowded -ing ending.

Which are the hard hangman words to guess for people?

Words that punish the usual opening. Many players call the vowels first, and all 18 words under No A, E, I, O or U turn those five calls into misses: Pry, Gym, Sky, Sync. After that, plain beats famous: nobody expects Vat, Jowl or Bulb.

How this list was compiled: Own selection by the Game Night Generator editors, written for this page and screened against the site's clean-deck rules: nothing sexual, no alcohol, drugs, gambling or gore, no real living people, no brand names and no word with two common spellings. The words were chosen by score, not by reputation. On 2026-09-19 we ran our guesser over all 175,479 lower-case entries of 3 to 12 letters in the Webster's Second word list that ships with macOS, then picked everyday words from the top of each length band and wrote a clue for each. Each word was scored by our own simulation on 2026-09-19: a guesser who knows the word's length and the 210,773 lower-case entries of that word list always calls the letter found in the most words that still fit; ties go to the commoner letter in the order etaoinshrdlcumwfgypbvkjxqz. x.misses is the number of wrong calls it made; easy is 0 to 2, medium 3 to 5, hard 6 or more. The d line prints the level and the miss count. The two pills '10 misses or more' and 'Under 10 misses' are cut from x.misses. The method follows Jon McLoone's 2010 study, https://blog.wolfram.com/2010/08/13/25-best-hangman-words/ (read 2026-09-19), which played 15 million games against a 90,000-word dictionary and found that jazz won most often at every game size and that short words drew the most mistakes.
