A game where you guess the acronym
Read only the letters aloud and let the table call out the words before anyone sees the choices. Science and space runs from NASA to the German word inside pH. Computers and phones has cc, SMS and COBOL. Everyday words and blends holds the ones nobody hears as initials any more: emcee, IOU, smog, goodbye.
A game where you guess the abbreviation
Measures and units asks what stands behind psi, Btu and the oz of ounce. Latin abbreviations is the footnote round: cf., ibid., viz. and op. cit., with what A.D. and N.B. mean in English. For a quick game of guess that acronym, pick one round under Start from.
Questions and answers
What are some easy acronym trivia questions and answers?
What does UFO stand for? What is email short for? Brunch is a blend of which two words? The answers are unidentified flying object, electronic mail, and breakfast and lunch.
What do laser and scuba stand for?
Laser is light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, and scuba is self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. The science and ocean quizzes on this site already ask those two, so this one asks the maser, sonar and radar.
What is the difference between an acronym and an abbreviation?
An abbreviation is any shortened form. An acronym is made of initial letters and, strictly, is said as a word, like radar. Letters named one by one, like VIP, make an initialism. This quiz has all three, and blends such as smog.
How were the answers checked?
Each was read on October 8, 2026 in the Merriam-Webster entry linked under it, with Wikipedia for the two on SOS and PIN. Where sources differ, as on radar and DVD, the answer is the dictionary's. Unofficial and not affiliated with Merriam-Webster.
