Solve it from the first word
Read the card aloud: the first word, each letter, the last word. The blanks show how long each hidden word is. Work along from the first word, because every word must join the one before it and the one after it. Stuck? The reader may give one more letter of the next word. Show answer gives all six words and the five links.
Other games with this name
As a chain link word game generator, this page deals compound chains only. The spoken last-letter game (apple, elephant, tiger) needs no cards, so it is not here.
Tips
- A different word that makes two real compounds earns the point. Look both up in a dictionary.
- With younger players, press Level, then Easy, and give a second letter of every hidden word.
Questions and answers
How do you play a word chain game?
Each word links to the next to make a compound word or a set phrase: rain, bow, tie gives rainbow and bow tie. The card shows both ends and one letter of each word between. The first player to name all six wins the card.
How do teams use a chain link game generator?
Split into teams and press Play a 1-minute round. One team solves as many chains as it can, then takes a +1 for each on the end card. Change the reader every round.
Is every link a real word?
Yes. Each link, such as doorbell or pool table, has its own entry in two online dictionaries, checked on the day the deck was written. No link is a brand, a title or a name.
What do the levels mean?
Easy chains use everyday compounds. Medium chains hold one link you may not say often, such as signpost. Hard chains hold two or more, such as piecework and tiebreak.
