One way to play
This game has no rule book, so agree yours first. Ours: read the card aloud, then teams take turns to sing one line that holds the word. A line counts only if a player on the other team knows the song, and no song is used twice. The team that cannot answer loses the card, and the other side takes the point. The game is also played as grab the mic.
Pick the words
Topic opens the groups, such as Colors or Night and day, and the levels. Easy words are ones most players can sing at once. Hard ones, such as Thursday or Boulevard, can stop a whole room.
Tips
- Humming does not count. The word has to be sung, in tune or not.
- Any decade and any language is fair, as long as one player on the other team knows the song.
Questions and answers
How do you play the song word game?
Deal a word. Teams take turns to sing a line from a real song with that word in it. A song can be used once, and a team that cannot answer loses the card. Rules vary, so agree yours before the first card.
Does the page play or name any songs?
No. It deals words only. No song title, singer or lyric is printed anywhere on the page. The singers bring the songs, which is the whole game.
What if the table argues about a line?
Use the house rule: a line counts when a player on the other team knows the song. A made-up tune loses the card. Whether Dreaming counts for Dream is up to the table, so decide once and keep to it.
How many players does it need?
Two can trade lines across a table. With more, make teams and let anyone on a team sing. For a score, press Play a 1-minute round: the end card has a +1 for each of two teams.
