Notes

Before the first cup: allergies
The host asks every guest what they cannot eat or drink, and leaves those foods off the table.
Anyone may pass a cup
A blank line costs the point and nothing else.
Eyes closed, or cups covered
Guests close their eyes or wear a blindfold, or the host hides each cup under a napkin. A guest who would rather look first may.
One taste, then write
Taste, or only smell, then write one guess beside the cup number.
One point a cup 1
The host may weigh the cups differently. This is our way.
A tie on points
One more cup settles it: the first right guess wins.

How it works

A guess the food challenge is a blind taste test: the host numbers small cups of food, and players taste or smell each one and write what it is. This page prints the guess sheet, the host's key and the rules.

Guess the food challenge ideas, by kind

The four Host's key sheets list foods that work: fruit, crackers and snacks, juices, and spices guessed by smell alone. Write a cup number beside each one you put out.

Run the guess the taste game

Ask every guest about allergies first; that rule prints on each sheet. Number the cups, choose the guess sheet for 6, 10 or 12 in the Sheet list and press Print blank sheet. Nobody is timed, and anyone may pass a cup.

Guess the jelly bean flavor game

Jelly bean round: 8 colors is a jelly bean flavor guessing game: one bean of each color, eyes closed. The flavors come from the bag's own label.

Tips
  • Try pear beside apple, and white grape juice beside apple juice.

Questions and answers

How do you play a guess the flavor game?

Each player tastes one numbered cup at a time without seeing what is in it, then writes a guess beside the number. The host reads the key, and the most right guesses wins.

What are good foods for guess the food challenge?

Mild, familiar foods are our suggestion: peeled apple and pear, banana, grapes, plain crackers, pretzels, popcorn and fruit juices. The host's key sheets list them by kind. Nothing hot, spoiled or unpleasant belongs on the table.

Do players have to wear a blindfold?

No. Closing your eyes works, or the host can cover each cup. A player who would rather look first may, and anyone may pass a cup. A blank line costs only the point.

How is it scored?

One point a cup is our suggestion, written in the points box after the key is read. If two sheets tie, one more cup settles it. It is a folk game with no official rules.

Rules, printed under the sheet 16

  • A tie on points One more cup settles it: the first right guess wins.
  • Anyone may pass a cup A blank line costs the point and nothing else.
  • Before the first cup: allergies The host asks every guest what they cannot eat or drink, and leaves those foods off the table.
  • Eyes closed, or cups covered Guests close their eyes or wear a blindfold, or the host hides each cup under a napkin. A guest who would rather look first may.
  • Fresh cup, fresh spoon Nothing goes back on the table once someone has tasted from it.
  • Hide the numbers Write the numbers where a guest cannot see them through the cup.
  • Jelly beans: look-alikes are the hard ones Two reds or two greens side by side make the round harder.
  • Mix the kinds Ten cups drawn from three lists make a good table: some fruit, some snacks, a juice or two.
  • Not a race Nobody is timed. Hand the sheet in when every cup has had its turn.
  • One point a cup The host may weigh the cups differently. This is our way.
  • One taste, then write Taste, or only smell, then write one guess beside the cup number.
  • Only foods people enjoy Nothing spoiled, nothing spicy-hot and nothing chosen to disgust. This is a guessing game and never a dare.
  • Sort the beans by color The host sorts ordinary fruit-flavored jelly beans by color and copies each color's flavor from the bag onto a key. One bean of each color a guest.
  • Spices are guessed by nose The cups stay on the table and nobody tastes them.
  • Water between cups Players take a sip of water after each cup, before the next one.
  • Write a cup number beside each food you serve Leave the box empty for a food you skip. The numbered lines are what the host reads out at the end.

How this list was compiled: Written by the Game Night Generator editors on 2026-10-03. A blind taste test at a party is a folk game with no governing body and no standard sheet, so the eight layouts, the sizes (6, 10 or 12 cups) and the scoring are the editors' own, and the page says so. The 38 foods on the host's key sheets are the editors' suggestions of mild, everyday foods: 12 fruits, 10 crackers and snacks, 8 juices and 8 spices to smell. No brand is named, no flavor is stated for any jelly bean (the host copies those from the bag), nothing is a dare and nothing unpleasant is listed. The lines about allergies, passing a cup and clean spoons are a host's rules for a party game; nothing here is advice about food, diet or health. Licence: own work
