  • Road Trip Crew A driver in sunglasses, a navigator with a folded map, a napper with a blanket and a snack keeper who guards the bag.

For four 6

  • Battery Levels A battery drawn on each tee: one bar, two bars, three bars and full. The friend with one bar yawns all day.
  • Circle, Square, Triangle and Star One big shape on each tee, each in its own color.
  • Four Road Signs A cardboard sign on a string for each of you: Stop, Yield, One Way and Detour. Direct traffic in the hall.
  • The Four Suits of a Deck of Cards Four white tees with one big suit drawn on each: a red heart, a red diamond, a black club and a black spade.
  • North, East, South and West One big letter on each tee: N, E, S and W. For the photo, stand where your letter belongs.
  • Plus, Minus, Times and Divide One math sign on each tee. Stand between any two classmates and turn them into a problem.

For five 8

  • 2 + 3 = 5 Five tees make one sum: a 2, a plus sign, a 3, an equals sign and a 5. Swap two places and see who notices.
  • A Car Four wheels in black with a paper-plate hubcap each, and a driver in the middle who holds a pot lid as the steering wheel.
  • A Five-Paragraph Essay Tees lettered Introduction, Body 1, Body 2, Body 3 and Conclusion. The conclusion repeats whatever the introduction says.
  • A Place Setting One in white as the plate, three in gray as the fork, the knife and the spoon with the shape cut from cardboard, and one draped in a cloth napkin.
  • A, E, I, O, U and Sometimes Y The five vowels on five tees. A sixth friend can be Y and join only sometimes.
  • Name Tags for the Whole Squad A paper name tag each, with your job in the group: The Planner, The Navigator, The Snack Carrier, The Photographer and The One With the Charger.
  • S, Q, U, A, D One letter on each tee. Line up to spell it, then scramble yourselves in the hall.
  • Who, What, When, Where and Why One question word on each tee. Each of you answers everything with that word.

For six to eight 8

  • A Chess Set, One of Each Piece A king and a queen in paper crowns, a bishop, a knight with a paper horse's mane, a rook with a cardboard tower top and a pawn, all in black or all in white.
  • A Pizza in Six Slices Each of you is one slice, in tan and red with a paper topping of your own. Stand in a circle for the photo, points in.
  • A Row of Dominoes A different domino drawn on each white tee. Stand in a line, close together, and lean when the first one leans.
  • The Days of the Week Seven tees, Monday to Sunday, and Friday gets a party hat. Five friends can stop at Friday and be the school week.
  • The Eight Planets One planet drawn on each tee: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Saturn wears a paper ring.
  • PEMDAS Six tees: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction. Walk in that order, always.
  • Q, W, E, R, T, Y The first six keys of the top letter row of a keyboard, one on each tee. Stand in order and type yourselves down the hall.
  • The Six Sides of a Die Six white tees with black dots, from one dot to six. Line up in order, then shuffle.

For a whole class or team 11

  • A Bookshelf Each tee is the spine of a book: an invented title written down the front. Line up shoulder to shoulder.
  • A Clock Face Twelve wear the numbers one to twelve and stand in a circle. Two more are the hands and point at the time.
  • A Constellation Everyone in dark blue or black with a yellow paper star on the chest, joined hand to hand by lengths of yarn into a shape of your own.
  • A Countdown Tees numbered from ten down to one, and a last friend whose tee says Liftoff. Count down out loud before the bell.
  • A Jigsaw Puzzle Cut one poster-size drawing into as many pieces as you have people and tape a piece to each back. Assemble yourselves for the photo.
  • A School Bus One driver in front with a paper-plate steering wheel and everyone else in yellow, walking two by two behind.
  • A Whole Deck of Cards Each of you draws a card from a real deck and copies it onto a white tee, in red or black. A deck has 52 cards, so nobody doubles up.
  • The Alphabet One letter on each tee, from A onward, as far as the class goes. Spell words in the hall with whoever is nearby.
  • One Sentence, a Word a Shirt Agree on a sentence with as many words as you have people, one word on each tee, and one more friend as the period.
  • Ten Pins and a Bowling Ball A team of eleven: ten in white with a stripe of red tape at the collar, standing in a triangle, and one in black as the ball, who strolls up for the photo.
  • The Twelve Months A team of twelve, each dressed for one month, from a January scarf to an August sun hat to December mittens.

How it works

These squad day spirit week ideas are sets that need four or more people, such as the four seasons, a s'more or a box of crayons. Each line says what every person wears, and the first need only the closet.

Group day ideas for spirit week, by head count

Count the squad first. Four fills the card suits, a compass or a relay team. Five spells S, Q, U, A, D or stacks a sandwich. Six to eight makes a die, a chess set or the planets. A whole class or a team becomes a deck of cards or a clock face.

Squad day ideas when someone drops out

Some sets survive a missing friend: a train, the alphabet and a row of dominoes read at any size. A s'more with one cracker does not, so keep one of the flexible sets as the backup.

  • Agree on who is which part before anyone gets dressed. Two Wednesdays and no Friday is a short week.
  • Stand in order for every photo. A sandwich with the bread in the middle is hard to read.

Questions and answers

What are good squad day ideas for spirit week?

Sets a stranger reads at a glance: the five senses, the days of the week, a fruit bowl, a road trip crew. Each person wears one part, and the costume only makes sense when you stand together.

What are group day ideas for spirit week?

For a big group, choose a set with room for everyone: a countdown from ten, a jigsaw puzzle taped to your backs, a bookshelf of invented titles, or a school bus walking two by two.

How many people do you need for squad day?

Four or more on this list. Two or three friends are better served by the dynamic duo list, which holds pairs and trios of different things, or by the twin day list of matching outfits.

What is the easiest squad day costume?

Split one winter outfit four ways over plain clothes: a hat, a scarf, mittens and a coat. With plain tees and a marker, write one math sign each, or one word each of a sentence you agree on.
