Props: a balloon, a paper slip and a pen each.
  2. First-Footing RelayIn Scotland and northern England the first visitor through the door after midnight, the first-foot, brings luck and gifts such as a coin, shortbread, salt and coal. Teams race to carry those four, the coal made of black paper, one at a time from the front door to a table. Players: 6 to 24. Time: 10 min. Props: a coin, a shortbread, a salt shaker and a paper coal for each team.

Countdown and midnight games 12

  • Auld Lang Syne Lyric Fill-In Print the first verse and chorus of the song Robert Burns wrote down in 1788 with every fifth word blanked out. Teams fill the gaps from memory, the host reads the real words, and everyone sings the corrected version at midnight. Players: 4 to 40. Time: 10 min. Props: printed lyric sheets and pens.
  • Balloon Pop Countdown Before the party, tuck a task slip into each balloon, blow it up and write a time on it: swap seats, group photo, name one highlight of your year. Pop each balloon when its time arrives and do what the slip says. An adult does the popping and picks up every piece at once; ask about latex allergy first. Players: any number. Time: 5 min. Props: balloons, paper slips, a marker and a pin.
  • Countdown Parcel in Ten Layers Wrap a prize in ten layers numbered from 10 down to 1, with a question about the year under each one. Pass it round while music plays. Countdown and midnight games, continued

  • Counting Down Without a Clash The group counts down from twenty to one, one voice at a time, with no order agreed and no pointing. If two people speak at once, start again from twenty. Most rooms need several tries, which is why it suits the last ten minutes. Players: 5 to 25. Time: 8 min. Props: none.
  • Cross Arms on the Last Verse In the Scottish custom, singers of Auld Lang Syne join hands in a circle and cross their arms only when the last verse starts. Appoint a caller to shout "cross" at the right moment. Anyone who crosses early says a resolution out loud. Players: 6 to 60. Time: 5 min. Props: none.
  • Guess the Minute Cover the clocks and ask everyone to close their eyes. Each guest stands up when they think exactly sixty seconds have passed, and the host with the stopwatch names the closest. Play again at three minutes for a harder round. Players: 4 to 40. Time: 5 min. Props: a stopwatch.
  • Hourly Countdown Bags Label one paper bag for each hour from eight o'clock to midnight and hide a small game in each: a deck of cards, party horns, glow sticks. When the hour strikes, the youngest guest opens that bag and the room plays what is inside. Players: any number. Time: 10 min. Props: paper bags, a marker and a small surprise for each hour.
  • Jump Into the New Year In Denmark people jump off a chair at midnight to leap into the new year. Swap the chair for a low step or a line of tape on the floor, line everyone up at 11:59 and jump together on zero. Have someone catch the photo in mid-air. Players: any number. Time: 3 min. Props: tape or one low step.
  • Midnight Somewhere Else Look up a city that reaches midnight when your own clock says eight or nine. Give three clues so guests can guess the city, then run a full countdown for it with horns and juice. Anyone with a babysitter to relieve gets a midnight too. Players: any number. Time: 8 min. Props: a world clock on a phone and party horns.
  • Party Horn Orchestra Split the room into three sections, each with a different noisemaker. A conductor points to bring sections in and out, keeps them quiet with a flat hand, and builds to everyone at once for the last ten seconds of the year. Players: 6 to 60. Time: 5 min. Props: party horns, shakers and two pot lids.
  • Sixty-Second Balloon Drop The ball in Times Square takes sixty seconds to come down. At 11:59 each team lowers a balloon on a string from a raised hand toward the floor as slowly and evenly as it can. The balloon that touches down closest to zero wins. Ask about latex allergy first, and an adult picks up every piece of a burst balloon at once. Players: 4 to 30. Time: 3 min. Props: a balloon on a string for each team.
  • Twelve Grapes at Midnight A Spanish tradition: eat one grape on each of the twelve clock chimes at midnight, one for every month of the coming year. Hand out twelve small seedless grapes each just before twelve. Finishing in time is said to bring a lucky year. Young children do not race the chimes: they sit down and eat quartered grapes at their own pace, or stick twelve stickers on a card, one for each chime. Players: any number. Time: 3 min. Props: twelve seedless grapes per guest.

Year in review games 12

  • Awards of the Year Ballot Hand out ballots with a dozen categories about your own group: trip of the year, meal of the year, save of the year, most improved cook. Guests vote in secret and the host counts. Every category is a compliment, and winners give a ten-second speech. Players: 8 to 40. Time: 20 min. Props: printed ballots and pens.
  • Calendar Scramble Write twelve events from your group's year on cards, shuffle them and give one set to each team. The first team to lay them out in the order they happened wins. Settle arguments with the dates on your phone photos. Players: 4 to 24. Time: 8 min. Props: a set of event cards for each team.
  • Camera Roll Calendar The host calls a month and everyone has thirty seconds to find a photo they took in it. Each person shows theirs and explains it in one sentence. The room points to its favorite, which earns a point, and the next month is called. Players: 4 to 16. Time: 15 min. Props: each player's own phone.
  • Fishbowl of the Year Each player writes three things from the past year on slips: an event, a craze, a phrase everyone kept saying. Two teams take one-minute turns. Round one allows any description, round two one word only, round three mime. Players: 6 to 16. Time: 25 min. Props: paper slips, a bowl and a timer.
  • Guess Whose Year Everyone writes three things that happened to them this year on a card, with no name. The host reads each card aloud and the room votes on who wrote it. Score a point for every correct guess and two for the writer nobody picks. Players: 6 to 20. Time: 15 min. Props: index cards and pens.
  • Month-by-Month Charades Write the twelve months on slips. The actor draws one and mimes something the whole group did or saw in that month, or a holiday that falls in it. The team has to name both the month and the event before the minute is up. Players: 6 to 20. Time: 20 min. Props: twelve paper slips, a bowl and a timer.
  • One-Word Story of the Year Tell the story of the group's year one word at a time, going round the circle. It starts "This year we" and has to end on the word "midnight". Anyone who pauses for more than three seconds sits the next sentence out. Players: 4 to 15. Time: 6 min. Props: none.
  • Rose, Thorn, Bud Round the table, each person names a rose (a highlight of the year), a thorn (something hard) and a bud (something they look forward to). Nobody comments until everyone has spoken. It suits the quiet half hour before midnight. Players: 3 to 12. Time: 15 min. Props: none.
  • Song Intros of the Year Play the first five seconds of songs that came out this year. Teams answer by standing up, and a wrong guess locks that team out of the song. Finish with one track from each decade in which a guest was born. Players: 4 to 40. Time: 15 min. Props: a playlist and a speaker.
  • Twelve Months Memory Chain The first player says "In January I" and adds something they did. The next repeats it and adds February, and so on round the circle to December. After a slip, the chain restarts from the month that was dropped. Players: 4 to 12. Time: 10 min. Props: none.
  • Two Truths and a Lie: This Year Only Each player gives three statements about their last twelve months, two true and one invented, and the room votes on the lie. Limiting it to this year stops old friends from knowing every answer before it is spoken. Players: 4 to 20. Time: 15 min. Props: none.
  • Year in Review Quiz Write twenty questions about your own group's year, not the news: who moved house, which month was the camping trip, who burned the burgers. Tables answer as teams and swap papers to mark them. Players: 6 to 40. Time: 20 min. Props: a question list, paper and pens.

Resolution and prediction games 10

  • Bucket List Bracket Collect eight things the group could do together next year, from a camping trip to a chili cook-off, and draw them into a bracket. The room votes by show of hands, pair by pair, until one plan wins. Set the date before the party ends. Players: 4 to 30. Time: 10 min. Props: a large sheet of paper and a marker.
  • Fold-Over Forecasts Each player writes the name of someone in the room at the top of a sheet, folds it over and passes it on. Next comes "will", then an activity, a place and a reason, with a fold after each. Unfold the sheets and read out the forecasts. Players: 4 to 12. Time: 10 min. Props: paper and pens.
  • Fortune Cup Draw Write thirty silly fortunes for the year on slips, such as "You will finally fix the squeaky door", and fold them into a cup. Each guest draws one and reads it aloud in a grand voice. The room votes on which is most likely to come true. Players: 4 to 30. Time: 8 min. Props: paper slips and a cup.
  • Pop the Old Habits Everyone writes a habit to leave behind in the old year on a slip and pushes it into a balloon before blowing it up. On the signal, players sit on their own balloon to pop it. Slips stay private unless the writer wants to read theirs out. Ask about latex allergy first, and pick up every piece afterwards. Players: 4 to 30. Time: 5 min. Props: a balloon, a paper slip and a pen each.
  • Prediction Envelopes Each guest answers the same ten questions about the year ahead: who will move house, who takes up a new hobby, which month brings the first snow. Seal the answers in an envelope and score them as the first game of next year's party. Players: 4 to 30. Time: 15 min. Props: printed question sheets, pens and a large envelope.
  • Resolution Charades Fill a bowl with well-worn resolutions: run a 5K, learn guitar, keep a plant alive, call Grandma on Sundays. Actors mime one without speaking while their team shouts guesses. Give each actor one minute and count the cards guessed. Players: 6 to 20. Time: 20 min. Props: resolution slips, a bowl and a timer.
  • Resolution Signature Bingo Give each guest a 5 by 5 grid of common resolutions, such as "drink more water" and "read 12 books". Guests mingle and collect a signature from someone who has made each one, one square per person. The first full row wins. Players: 10 to 50. Time: 15 min. Props: a printed grid and a pen each.
  • Whose Resolution Is This Everyone writes one real resolution on a slip and drops it in a bowl. The host reads them out one at a time and the room guesses whose each one is. Writers keep a straight face until the vote is in. Players: 5 to 25. Time: 10 min. Props: paper slips, pens and a bowl.
  • Word of the Year Sketch Each player picks one word for their coming year, such as "rest", "build" or "outdoors", and draws it without using letters. The room guesses the word, then the artist explains the choice in one sentence. Players: 3 to 12. Time: 15 min. Props: paper and markers.
  • Would You Rather: Next Year Edition The host reads choices about the year ahead: a month with no phone or a month with no sugar, learn a language or learn an instrument. Guests walk to the left or right wall to vote, and one person from each side defends the choice. Players: 6 to 50. Time: 10 min. Props: none.

Table and seated games 8

  • Clock Dice Race Each player draws a clock face and takes turns rolling two dice. Cross off the hours in order from 1 to 12, using either die alone or the two added together. The first player to cross off 12 has reached midnight and wins. Players: 2 to 8. Time: 10 min. Props: two dice, paper and pencils.
  • Happy New Year Word Hunt Write HAPPY NEW YEAR at the top of a page. Players have three minutes to make as many words of three letters or more as they can from those letters. Cross out any word that two players share, then count what is left. Players: 2 to 30. Time: 5 min. Props: paper, pens and a timer.
  • New Year Around the World Match Read out five customs and ask teams to name the country for each: twelve grapes at midnight, jumping off a chair, the first-foot at the door, twelve round fruits on the table, a ball that drops for sixty seconds. Answers: Spain, Denmark, Scotland, the Philippines, the United States. Players: 4 to 40. Time: 5 min. Props: none.
  • New Year Category Round Roll a letter and give everyone two minutes to fill a list of New Year categories: a resolution, something in a party bag, a thing people do at midnight, a word from a toast. An answer that another player also wrote scores nothing. Players: 3 to 20. Time: 10 min. Props: paper, pens and a timer.
  • Party Horn Guess the Tune One player draws a well-known tune and plays it on a party horn. The horn has a single note, so rhythm is all the team has to go on. Allow thirty seconds per tune, then pass the horn bag to the other team. Players: 4 to 16. Time: 8 min. Props: a clean party horn for each player and tune slips.
  • Sparkling Juice Blind Tasting Pour four or five sparkling juices and sodas into numbered cups where nobody can see the bottles. Guests sip, write down what they think each one is and rank them. Reveal the bottles and toast midnight with the winner. Players: 4 to 20. Time: 15 min. Props: small cups, four or five sparkling drinks, paper and pens.
  • Toast Writers' Round Each pair draws three random words from a bowl, such as "sock", "Tuesday" and "volcano", and has three minutes to write a New Year toast that uses all three. Pairs deliver their toasts with glasses of juice raised, and the room votes. Players: 4 to 20. Time: 12 min. Props: word slips, a bowl, paper and pens.
  • Top Hat Card Flick Set a top hat or a bowl six feet from a chair. Players flick ten playing cards each, one at a time, and score a point for every card that lands inside. Ties are settled by a flick-off from one step farther back. Players: 2 to 12. Time: 8 min. Props: a hat or bowl and a deck of cards.

Up and moving games 10

  • Confetti Balloon Keep-Up Put a pinch of paper confetti in each balloon before you blow it up. Teams keep theirs in the air without using hands while the host counts down from sixty. A balloon that touches the floor is out, and at zero an adult pops the survivors and picks up every piece at once. Ask about latex allergy first. Players: 4 to 30. Time: 5 min. Props: balloons, paper confetti and a pin.
  • Decades Freeze Dance Play one song from each decade in which a guest was born, oldest first. When the music stops, everybody freezes. Anyone who moves becomes a judge for the next song, and the last dancer standing picks the first song of the new year. Players: 6 to 40. Time: 12 min. Props: a playlist and a speaker.
  • First-Footing Relay In Scotland and northern England the first visitor through the door after midnight, the first-foot, brings luck and gifts such as a coin, shortbread, salt and coal. Teams race to carry those four, the coal made of black paper, one at a time from the front door to a table. Players: 6 to 24. Time: 10 min. Props: a coin, a shortbread, a salt shaker and a paper coal for each team.
  • Glow Stick Ring Toss Snap glow sticks into rings and stand a few bottles of sparkling juice on the floor as targets. Each player throws five rings from a line two big steps back. Turn the lights down for the final between the top two scorers. Players: 2 to 20. Time: 10 min. Props: glow stick rings and four full bottles.
  • Human Clock Two players from each team lie on the floor as the hands of a clock, and the rest of the team arranges them to show the time the host calls. The fastest correct clock wins the round. Finish with every team showing midnight. Players: 6 to 30. Time: 6 min. Props: none.
  • NEW YEAR Letter Hunt Hide cards with the letters N, E, W, Y, E, A and R around the rooms, one set per team, each set in its own color. Teams search for their own color only and race to lay the seven letters out in order on the floor. Players: 4 to 24. Time: 10 min. Props: seven letter cards for each team, in different colors.
  • Pack for Next Year Relay Each team gets a suitcase and a pile of awkward things to pack: a pillow, a colander, a winter coat. One runner at a time carries an item across the room and packs it. The first team to close the zipper with everything inside wins. Players: 6 to 24. Time: 10 min. Props: a suitcase and a pile of household items for each team.
  • Party Hat Pass Teams stand in a line. A cone party hat travels from head to head down the line and nobody may touch it with a hand, so players have to bend, tilt and catch. A hat that hits the floor goes back to the start of the line. Players: 6 to 30. Time: 6 min. Props: one cone party hat for each team.
  • Photo Booth Challenge Cards Stack cards by the photo corner with a pose on each: everyone in mid-jump, the year in three faces, a human clock showing midnight. Groups draw a card, take the shot and send it to the host, who shows them all at 11:30. Players: any number. Time: 20 min. Props: challenge cards, a phone and a few hats or glasses.
  • Twelve Round Things Hunt In the Philippines, families set out twelve round fruits for the New Year, because circles are said to attract money. Teams get five minutes to find twelve different round objects around the house, one for each month. No two may be the same kind of thing. Players: 4 to 24. Time: 8 min. Props: a tray for each team.

How this list was compiled: Written for a New Year's Eve party of adults, with one group for nights when kids from age 6 are in the room, in our own words; player ranges and times are our estimates. Every game is alcohol-free: toasts are made with juice. A custom that could not be confirmed on a live page was left out. The New Year customs and traditional rules were checked on 2026-09-18 against English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ followed by the name): Twelve_Grapes, New_Year%27s_Eve, First-foot, Times_Square_Ball, Auld_Lang_Syne, Pass_the_parcel, Consequences_(game), Celebrity_(game), Charades. Plan the night backward from midnight

Most New Year's Eve party games for adults get played too early. Choose Countdown and midnight games in the All games menu and take away all but one game, for the final ten minutes, with ×. Then choose Year in review games for a sit-down game after dinner and press again: the game you kept stays and two new ones join it.

The customs behind party games for New Year's Eve

In Spain people eat twelve grapes on the twelve chimes of midnight, one for each coming month. In Denmark they jump off a chair into the new year, here a jump from a line of tape. In Scotland and northern England the first-foot, the first visitor after midnight, brings gifts such as a coin, shortbread, salt and coal, and that becomes a relay.

  • Every toast here is made with juice, so the games work with drivers, teenagers and non-drinkers.
  • Set an alarm for 11:45 and hand out the grapes, horns or balloons. At 11:59 nobody can find the bag.
  • Fill in Prediction Envelopes before ten, while people still feel like writing, and store them with the decorations.
